Amongst today's Red Wings-related stories: The Left Wing Lock's Sarah Lindenau finally received the go-ahead to publish the New York Rangers' prospect tournament roster, rounding out the eight teams involved, including the Red Wings (and their try-outs), the Blues, Wild, Stars, Sabres, Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. The prospect tournament starts on Thursday, September 5th and will end on Monday, September 10th (and Lindenau's posited a superb article highlighting prospects to watch at the tourney). The Wings' main camp's on-ice portion begins on September 12th, there's an alumni game on the 14th (RedWingsCamps' Twitter account posted a picture of the spiffy one-off jerseys yesterday) and the camp includes two exhibition-game-day practices on the 16th (when the Wings play Chicago) and 17th (when the Wings play the Penguins). Red Wings mid-day news: Helm returns to informal skate; prospect stuff, Weiss and an unlikely trade

Amongst today's Red Wings-related stories, before I pack the car and head up to Traverse City, anyway: 18-plus is a crowd: The #RedWings are back on the ice today with @Trto90 and @bssmith7 making it 18 players participating in the informal skate. — The Wheel Deal (@Bill_Roose) September 4, 2013 Prepare to exhale, Wings fans: Tomas Tatar one of the...

Weiss skates with new teammates

DETROIT -- Many more familiar faces began arriving in Detroit on Tuesday as the Red Wings continue to hold informal practice sessions at Joe Louis Arena. Seventeen Red Wings players from last seasons team were in attendance, but it was another new guy who grabbed all the attention. Former Florida Panthers forward and one-time Plymouth Whalers star Stephen Weiss seemed extremely...

Brendan Smith to help Red Wings kick off 115 school assembly-holding season on Wednesday

The Detroit Red Wings' community relations department posits a press release noting the start of the Wings' "school assembly program" starting tomorrow: DETROIT RED WINGS FOUNDATION KICKS OFF THIRD YEAR OF THE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY PROGRAM WITH DEFENSEMAN BRENDAN SMITH THIS WEDNESDAY ... Wings School Assembly Program set to Make 115 Visits During 2013-14 Season...

Red Wings overnight report: for better or Samuelsson

As September begins and the Red Wings prepare for the prospect tournament (which begins on Thursday in Traverse City) and their main training camp (from Thursday, September 12th to Tuesday, September 17th), there's a fly in the ointment in terms of the Wings' status as over the cap by about $638,000 (per Capgeek) and over the 23-man roster limit by 2 players. If the Wings...

Pavel Datsyuk vs. Pavel Datsyuk in Red Wings’ Top Plays final, just like TSN’s POY

This seems to be a familiar result given Pavel Datsyuk's win over Pavel Datsyuk for TSN's Play of the Year title... Well our @Flagstar Top Plays Showdown Finals is Datsyuk and...Datsyuk. Vote now for which magical play was the best! — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) September 2, 2013 Which Datsyuk goals made the cut? Let's...

Red Wings mid-day quickies: Ferraro’s journey, Athanasiou’s slick move and Franzen’s ‘numbers’

Today's Red Wings-related stories mostly involve "tidbits," but I did find something of a tale of two prospects who are taking part in the Red Wings' main camp and prospect tournament, respectively, on what is a bit of a "slow day." Grand Rapids Griffins forward Landon Ferraro is making a 2,260-mile trip from Vancouver, British Columbia to Grand Rapids...

Brunner And His Agent Are Being Patient

A few weeks ago, George Malik referenced a story on the status of Damien Brunner's search for a deal with an NHL team. As of today, not a whole lot apparently has changed. I asked Brunner's agent, Neil Sheehy, for an update this morning. "We are being patient, and Damien is wide open to any team at this point," Sheehy said. Brunner is reportedly looking...

*Could* Damien Brunner play for EV Zug, at least until he latches on with an NHL team? Possibly.

This is a little different: under the last CBA, the NHL prohibited players who'd skated in professional hockey leagues outside of North America after the start of the NHL season to sign with teams without clearing waivers first. This year, the regular season begins early--on Tuesday, October 1st--but the Swiss National A League's regular season begins on September 12th.....

2013-14 NHL Season Preview: Detroit Red Wings

This 2013-14 NHL Season Preview features the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings came within one shot of eliminating both the first and second seeds in the Western Conference in consecutive series last season. After beating Anaheim in a thrilling 7 game series, they had Chicago on the ropes, leading their second round series 3-1, and lost in overtime of game 7. Amazingly, last season was... plugs the Red Wings’ prospect tournament

This story isn't Red Wings-related per se, but's Mike G. Morreale gave the Red Wings' prospect tournament quite set of plugs and praises, and given that the lockout [T]here's a good chance fans in attendance might catch a glimpse of a future Calder Trophy winner as the NHL's rookie of the year. It happened in 2010 when Carolina Hurricanes forward...

Red Wings overnight report: on Tuesday’s practice stuff and outlining the tournament/camp/preseason

The Red Wings' players have been skating informally at Joe Louis Arena for almost two weeks now, but the day after Labor Day is generally the "official" start of "unofficial" and "informal" skates that happen to be watched by the Red Wings' coaches and management (they're not allowed to interact with the players on the ice until next Thursday...

Red Wings overnight report: on the tourney to come, some repetition and fantasy hockey gnus

Today marks the start of a very, very busy sixteen-day stretch for me, and while tomorrow's 230-mile drive's always an adventure, as the mom likes to say, "Packing is purgatory" (can you tell that my anxiety disorder's doing somersaults?). The Red Wings' players will skate at Joe Louis Arena as informal practices slowly but surely increase in both intensity...

Red Wings early overnight report: on making it up as I go along and gnus about Helm and Samuelsson

I arrived in Traverse City relatively safely a little earlier this evening, though I can't say the same for the windshield on my Pacifica, which now sports a 4-inch battle scar when it lost a battle with a pebble near Flint. I'm here, I'm unpacked, and I'm... Overwhelmed. Continue reading "Red Wings early overnight report: on making it up as I go along and...
