I know that Red WIngs fans were about as thrilled with the team's signings of forwards Kevin Porter and Andy Miele as you or I would be with getting lumps of coal on Christmas, but the signings did help build the foundation of the 2014-2015 Grand Rapids Griffins' roster. Today, the Grand Rapids Press's Peter J. Wallner examines the Griffins' roster as it stands after the Porter and Miele signings. as well as the signing of Shane Berschbach, who inked an AHL-only deal: Miele was the third leading scorer in the AHL with 72 points (27-45-72) in 70 games with Portland last season, while Porter played 50 games with Rochester with 36 points (19-17-36) and got into 12 games with the Buffalo Sabres (0-1-1). Both are former Hobey Baker Award winners. Berschbach, a collegiate the past four seasons, will battle for a roster spot in Grand Rapids or be sent to Toledo in the ECHL. Angry Red Wings Fans Edit GM Ken Holland’s Wikipedia Page

It’s safe to say that the Detroit Red Wings’ fans are not happy with their General Manager Ken Holland after the first day of Free Agency, especially after re-signing Kyle Quincey and giving him a raise. Safe to say that the Red Wings are no longer a premier destination for big time free agents, at least […] The post Angry Red Wings Fans Edit GM Ken Holland’s Wikipedia Page...

Anthony Mantha likes look of youth movement in Detroit

The Detroit Red Wings' two most recent first-round draft picks didn't waste any time getting acclimated at the team's 2014 Development Camp. Anthony Mantha (20th overall in 2013) and Dylan Larkin (15th overall in 2014) skated on a line during the first day of camp at Centre ICE Arena in Traverse City, Mich. Friday. "He's a great player," Mantha said of Larkin...

Detroit Red Wings can improve from within but need an impact trade for a defenseman at some point

The Detroit Red Wings will head into 2014-15 with virtually the same roster that finished 2013-14, barring a significant trade. This isn't how they planned it. They desperately wanted to upgrade their back end by adding a right-handed shooting defenseman and pursued several free agents on Tuesday. For a variety of seasons, none of which were financial, Matt Niskanen (Washington...

Holland after tough day: 'We'll keep kicking tires'

Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland had a bad day Tuesday, when he was snubbed by the unrestricted free agents he coveted most -- among others, Matt Niskanen (who landed in Washington) and Dan Boyle (who signed with the New York Rangers). But Holland understands the competition for free agents is fierce under the salary cap and he won't always land his man. "Our...

Relax, Hockeytown…Wings Will Be Fine

Sometimes, we as Detroit fans can be a bit spoiled. There, I said it. Tuesday’s NHL Free Agent frenzy came and went without the Detroit Red Wings addressing some of their most obvious weaknesses, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. If this were 2001, or any time in the pre-salary cap era, this lack of movement would have been unheard of. I mean, the Red Wings always get their...

Toronto Maple Leafs: David Legwand should be top free agent priority

The free agency signing period is underway and the first day saw 63 unrestricted free agents sign new NHL contracts. Although it was a busy day around the league, the Toronto Maple Leafs were somewhat quiet and lost out on a few players they were hoping to sign. Dave Bolland took the money and ran to Florida. Mason Raymond followed suit to Calgary. Montreal’s Josh Gorges was...

Another Embarrassing July 1 Proves Detroit Red Wings’ Brand Could Finally Be Dying Off

It’s early July, which as always means the start of free agency. That also used to signal in and exciting time as the Detroit Red Wings attempted to lure new names and pieces to town in hopes of chasing the Stanley Cup. But the Red Wings, for whatever combination of reasons, can no longer lure free agents, turning what used to be an exciting day into a snoozer around Motown. The...

Are You Excited About The Wings?

from Dave Bartkowiak Jr. of ClickOnDetroit, The truth is they're a young team on the rise still looking for an identity. They're looking to mesh. The Red Wings have huge promise and big expectations for young players such as Gustav Nyquist, Riley Sheahan, Tomas Tatar, Tomas Jurco, Petr Mrazek, Teemu Pulkkinen, Xavier Ouellet, Anthony Mantha, and dare I mention Brendan...

Setting up the Red Wings’ summer development camp

In news that is as predictable as suggesting that Michigan will be humid in July, I was in absentia yesterday due to a sinus bug. I'm not feeling fantastic today, either, but a day's worth of rest + many people having paid my way = it's time to pack and haul ass to Traverse City. The Red Wings' summer development camp begins tomorrow, as the Traverse City Record...

The Latest On Stephen Weiss

from chuck Pleiness of Red Wings Front, “He says he feels great,” Wings general manager Ken Holland said in a phone interview Thursday. “He went on the ice Monday. (Trainer) Piet Van Zant went up to watch him skate and he thought he looked good.” The Wings targeted Weiss on the first day of free agency last season and landed the center for a hefty five-year deal...

Summing Up What’s Left for the Detroit Red Wings After Day 1 of Free Agency

Ken Holland failed to land Christian Ehrhoff … or Dan Boyle … or Matt Niskanen … or Anton Stralman. Brad Richards signed for pennies on the dollar in Chicago. And Plan B in Detroit turned out to be a reunion with Kyle Quincey. What’s left for Holland now? Well … (If you’re looking for actual analysis, read Max DeMara on the loss of Hockeytown’s luster.)

Steve Moore now seeking $68 million in Todd Bertuzzi suit

Steve Moore’s civil suit against the Vancouver Canucks and Todd Bertuzzi, a.k.a. hockey’s pending O.J. Trial, just got about $30 million more interesting. Moore’s lawyers have filed documents that increase his financial claims in the case from $38 million to $68 million, according to the Toronto Star. Moore is seeking damages after a sucker-punch from Bertuzzi in a March...

Red Wings summer development camp 2014, day 1: introductions and immersion practice

If I had any worries about the Red Wings' summer development camp's comparative lack of ice time when examining previous camps, today's, "Getting to know you" skate alleviated my concerns, and they did so for one reason: Jeff Frickin' Blashill. The Grand Rapids Griffins' coach spent about 55 minutes with Teams Yzerman and Lidstrom today, and the amount...
