As training camp resumes today with morning and evening skates at Joe Louis Arena, with the 10:30 AM skate being streamed on Fox Sports Detroit's website and the 7 PM skate being promoted as a "Jam the Joe" event, with $1 concessions and an open-to-the-public skate on JLA's ice (Bring your own skates) from 8-10 PM, before the Wings wrap training camp up with another open-to-the-public practice at 12 PM on Friday... Is it possible that Detroit Red Wings' braintrust may enjoy thinking about hockey more than any other group of executives in the NHL. That's quite the supposition, but at least from the impressions speaking with people like Ken Holland, Jim Nill, Ryan Martin and even Mike Babcock have yielded for me, I would be willing to suggest that the Red Wings' braintrust may more thoroughly enjoy the thought processes that come with managing and coaching their NHL team more than any other hockey executives, well, anywhere. During Wednesday's bri...

Red Wings skate into a new era without Lidstrom

The Detroit Red Wings have played in the last 21 Stanley Cup playoffs. That postseason streak might be in jeopardy. The storied franchise is starting a season without seven-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom for the first time since the 1990-91, the year its run in the playoffs began. Lidstrom retired last summer and the 42-year-old defenseman turned down an offer from...

Red Wings name Zetterberg captain

The Detroit Red Wings have chosen Henrik Zetterberg as their captain, replacing retired defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. The announcement came as little surprise. Detroit made it official at a news conference Tuesday before a public scrimmage at Compuware Arena in Plymouth, where the Red Wings have been holding training camp. The 32-year-old Zetterberg has been an alternate captain...

Mike Knuble to Sign Tryout Deal With Grand Rapids Griffins After Failing to Make Detroit Red Wings’ Roster

Despite a spate of injuries that could leave the Detroit Red Wings down a couple of key forwards when the season opens, veteran Mike Knuble could not claim a roster spot. Instead, Knuble will head to the AHL. Knuble will sign PTO with Grand Rapids, trying to catch onto NHL team. — Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) January 18, 2013 A “PTO”, as mentioned by MLive’s Ansar Khan there...

PLYMOUTH, Mich. A capacity crowd, a new captain and the NHL back at it made it a successful night at Compuware Arena in Plymouth. There were so many fans who came out that they had to turn some away when the parking lot was full just after the gates opened...

Patrick Eaves cleared for return, Helm and Bertuzzi to miss season opener

According to the Detroit News, 28-year-old Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves has been cleared to return to the ice after missing the past year. Eaves, who hasn’t played since November of 2011 due to a broken jaw and concussion when a shot hit him in the face should be on the Wings’ roster Saturday night when they travel to St. Louis to take on the Blues. The Wings however will...

Hang on, fellow Red Wings fans, we’re groin to be fine…

Oh joy, here the groins come again. The Red Wings will start the season without Jakub Kindl (groin), Darren Helm (back) and most certainly Joey MacDonald (back), and Mikael Samuelsson has just recovered from a groin injury. As it turns out, groin injuries are apparently contagious, though Todd Bertuzzi apparently only skipped the latter half Jam the Joe practice with a sore groin...

Video: Henrik Zetterberg Talks to the NHL Network About Being Named Captain

The Detroit Red Wings, as expected, named Henrik Zetterberg captain on Tuesday, making the veteran forward just the third team captain since 1986. Zetterberg replaced Nicklas Lidstrom in that role — Lidstrom retired last summer following the Wings’ playoff loss to Nashville. Zetterberg talked with the NHL Network about what the honor meant and how he expects to lead in the locker...

Red Wings mid-day news, part 2: Ken Holland’s comments from Detroit Sports Broadcasters’ luncheon

Red Wings GM Ken Holland and special assistant to the GM Kris Draper took part in a luncheon held by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters' Association today, and Holland and Draper's comments are way too important to simply squeeze into the mid-day news post. Fox Sports Detroit's Dana Wakiji offered Twitter-based highlights of Holland's comments... #RedWings Holland...

If Detroit Red Wings Choose to Upgrade Their Defense, Wade Redden Could be the Perfect Fit

The Detroit Red Wings, fresh off an offseason which saw the team lose two steady defenders in Nicklas Lidstrom and Brad Stuart, might have identified the blue line as their biggest area of need for an upgrade quickly this season. In recent months, flashy back end names such as Keith Yandle, Jay Bouwmeester and Zach Bogosian have come up in rumors. Each one of those defenders, however...

The Red Wings Indoctrination: That Time I Decided to Make My Significant Other a Series Subject

Editors Note: This is a series that will run throughout the Red Wings season as Andrew attempts the treacherous journey of teaching his significant other about hockey, the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings and why the shootout is stupid. Check back regularly for updates on the process and anecdotes about how no matter what happens, Patrick Roy was never as good as Chris Osgood.  That whole...

Captain Zetterberg

To the surprise of no one, Zetterberg is the new captain of the Detroit Red Wings. Hank is now the 3rd Red Wing to wear the C since 1986. Pretty remarkable to think that since that time, there have been 5 U.S. presidents but only 3 Red Wings have worn the C. From the Red Wings Twitter feed: "It means a lot being a captain and being the captain of this organization. Looking...
