Today at 3 PM EDT, TSN and the NHL Network U.S. will air the Hockey Hall of Fame’s announcement of its 2012 induction class, and it’s all but assured that three-time Stanley Cup winner and long-time Red Wing Brendan Shanahan will receive a call from the HHOF’s selection committee sometime this morning. The present-day Red Wings’ organization has stolen some of the spotlight away from Shanahan’s day in the sun, however. The general manager who took over after Scotty Bowman snagged Shanahan from the Hartford Whalers is doing his best to ensure that the standard of excellence to which the organization’s held itself since Shanahan’s time with the team, the standard of excellence the team was able to maintain when Steve Yzerman retired and Shanahan moved along six summers ago, and the standard of excellence the team was able to maintain while Nicklas Lidstrom played for them will not slip. Regner: Hall sends Shanny message

Brendan Shanahan is a Hall of Fame player. What he was able to accomplish on the ice ranks with the all-time greats of the game. But hockey is rooted in strong traditions and has a code of conduct that one is expected to uphold. Hockey players might be brutish on the ice, but the off-the-ice code calls for them to be gentlemen first and foremost. Combining talent, personality and...

Red Wings overnight report: Frk’n draft talk, Hall of Fame Tuesday and yes, more free agent blather

Cue the dueling banjos, because this week’s shaping up as a two-topic slug-fest. This morning’s crop of Red Wings stories focus on topics we’ll probably continue revisiting from now until July 1st in the Red Wings’ crop of six new prospects from the 2012 Draft and even more free agent chatter as the press corps working in Zach Parise and Ryan Suter’s potential destinations...

Wings Will Be Going After Schultz

The Wings already got one coveted, rookie free agent and now they offically have thrown their hat in the ring for the other, Justin Schultz.    "We've contacted his agents to express the Detroit Red Wings are interested in signing him to a contract," general manager Ken Holland told MLive.com. "We think there's a tremendous opportunity in Detroit."...

NHL Draft: Detroit Red Wings Nab First Round Talent in the Second Round

By Rhys Richards (@RREsq) In this weekend’s 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the Detroit Red Wings waited until the 49th overall pick in the second round to make the team’s first selection. The extended wait was due to the team trading its first round pick to acquire defenseman Kyle Quincey at the Trade Deadline, but time could prove that the wait was worth it. With the 49th overall...

Brendan Shanahan wasn't left off the ballot for Janney affair

People have their opinions whenever the annual Hockey Hall of Fame class is announced. There are annual favorites who get overlooked (Fred Shero and Pat Burns come to mind), as well as personal heroes that fans would love to see in the hall. No one's ever 100% happy about the end result, but this year I generally noticed a lot less angst than usual regarding the class. Pavel...

Red Wings fortunate to see Martin Frk fall to 49th overall in Draft

Day 1 of the NHL Draft was a quiet one in the Draft Room of the Detroit Red Wings. They had last selected in the first round in 2010 when the team selected rugged Center Riley Sheahan from Notre Dame of the CCHA. They traded down from 29th overall in 2009 to 32nd overall to [...]

Detroit Red Wings Links: Could Keith Yandle Be a Trade Option?

Holland has already said that he would consider a trade, and one name that surfaced in rumored trade talks during the draft is that of Keith Yandle. Continue reading →

Waiting for Shanny Tuesday as former Red Wing Brendan Shanahan’s likely to receive a HHOF call

The Hockey Hall of Fame will announce its 2012 induction class tomorrow at 3 PM EDT (the announcement will be televised on TSN and the NHL Network U.S.), and it’s more or less guaranteed that former Red Wings forward Brendan Shanahan will receive a phone call from the HHOF’s selection committee sometime on Tuesday morning. As such, DetroitRedWings.com’s Bill Roose spoke to...

Wait, what? Red Wings’ Brendan Shanahan overlooked by the Hockey Hall of Fame?

I read the release from the Hockey Hall of Fame and couldn’t believe it. Long-time Red Wing Brendan Shanahan, his three Stanley Cups and 600-plus goals won’t be heading to Toronto this year, and I just can’t believe it. It’s insane. That’s it as I’m still sick, but I just can’t believe it. Pavel Bure and Adam Oates are fine players, as is Mats Sundin, but did they win...

Brendan Shanahan Snubbed From Hockey Hall of Fame in First Appearance on Ballot

This was Shanahan's first appearance on the Hall ballot, but he looked like a near-lock to earn admission. Continue reading →

Red Wings overnight report: multiple theories persist regarding Brendan Shanahan’s HHOF snub

By Malik Report standards, five entries in a day is downright delinquent, this sniffly blogger had laid down for an afternoon nap simply because I assumed Brendan Shanahan would obviously be named one of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s 2012 inductees, only to wake and find out that Adam Oates, Joe Sakic, Pavel Bure and Mats Sundin were named to the Hall, but not Shanahan on Tuesday afternoon...

Shanahan Shafted

Oates: In Sakic: In Sundin: In Bure: In And Brendan Shanahan has been unbelievably, unfathomably left out.  Bure and Sundin, yes.  Shanny…no.  It’s so pathetic that it’s hard to even muster any anger over this one. Continue reading "Shanahan Shafted"

Red Wings mid-day news: does Mike Ilitch’s presence ensure that the Wings will land top UFA’s?

Thanks to the oddities of Fox Sports Detroit’s aggregation, I needed an assist from NHLGossip to find the article which kicks off today’s crop of Red Wings news, but it’s worth the convoluted trip. We’ve been talking about the concept that NHL teams’ beat writers may or may not be trying to “sell” free agents on potential destinations, and FSD’s Art Regner suggests...

HHOF Screwed Over Shanny

For some reason I couldn't find a similar picture of Sundin... Shanahan was up for the Hockey Hall of Fame this year and I haven't wrote about it, because, well, I figured I'd get to it when he was inducted.  Because of course he'd be inducted right?  Going against the likes of Bure and Sundin, talented guys but ones who never won anything, Shanny and Sakic were...
