In a completely unexpected turn of events, Sportsnet in Canada is reporting that Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski is set to announce his retirement in the near future, possibly this week.  Rafalski, 37, just completed his 4th season with the Red Wings after signing a 5 year deal with them back in July of 2007.  This past season he finished with 4 goals and 44 assists for 48 points in 63 games played. Rafalski has been a mainstay on the Detroit blue line since signing the deal, and has been part of one of the better defensive pairings in the entire NHL.  Solid in his own zone, smart decisions with the puck, and a good outlet pass have made Rafalski one of Detroit’s better pickups in recent memory.  He is also dangerous on the powerplay, and proved to be a good team leader, providing the veteran leadership Detroit loves to have in its lineup.
