After Detroit Red Wings Let Another Deadline Pass, Pressure is on Ken Holland to Perform Soon

After another trade deadline passed without a move getting done, Ken Holland needs to do more this offseason to shake up his roster and surround his stars like Henrik Zetterberg with more talent. (Tom Gromak, Flickr) “We like our team. There’s not a deal out there which can make us better. We’ll get a lot of guys back from injury, which should help us moving forward.” ...

Red Wings late-morning mishmash: trade talk, a Datsyuk-Verlander exchange and praise for Jensen

The Red Wings will take to the ice for a quick practice before boarding an afternoon flight to Phoenix for the team's two-game trip out West to play the Coyotes on Thursday and Colorado on Friday, but before they do so, here's a smattering of Wings-related news. On the Red Wings trade front Quiet so far on #RedWings front, but am told by GM Ken Holland team is...

Apparently fans tossing moose legs on the ice is hockey tradition in Northern Manitoba

Most of you know of, or have heard of, the tradition in Motown where Detroit Red Wings fans will throw dead octopi on the ice during home games. Well, did you know there’s a similar, albeit less well known, tradition in Northern Manitoba, only instead of eight legged sea creatures the fans toss severed moose legs onto the ice? Yeah, neither did we. This past Monday night during...

Detroit Red Wings Trade Rumors: Derek Morris an Option With Jay Bouwmeester Gone?

The Detroit Red Wings may set their sights on Phoenix defenseman Derek Morris, following Jay Bouwmeester’s trade from Calgary to St. Louis. That’s what ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun speculated in his “Rumblings” blog on Tuesday morning, one day before the NHL’s trade deadline. According to LeBrun, the Wings were very much in the mix for Bouwmeester, “but, in the end, they didn’t...

Red Wings-Coyotes wrap-up and Wings-Avs set-up: brain fart loss yields urgency vs. Avs

The Detroit Red Wings caught a very late flight to Colorado to prepare for tonight's game against the Avalanche (9 PM EDT, FSD/Altitude/97.1 FM) having placed themselves in a particularly desperate situation thanks to their awful showing in a 4-2 loss to Phoenix on Thursday evening. The Wings now sit in 7th place in the Western Conference standings with 41 points, but the 18...

Red Wings on Facebook: Getting DeKeyser

By now you're well aware that the Detroit Red Wings have signed former Western Michigan University defenseman Danny DeKeyser. What you may not know is just how sought-after he was. GMs from around the league tried their best to convince DeKeyser that their team would be the best fit. Since DeKeyser is so young, traditional means of recruitment were tossed out the window as the...

Why the Red Wings didn’t land Bouwmeester

ESPN's Pierre LeBrun offers quite the scoop as to why the Detroit Red Wings did not win the Jay Bouwmeester sweepstakes (aside from the fact that the Wings would have been nuts to take on all of Bouwmeester's $6.68 million cap hit for next season given that the team needs to re-sign UFA's-to-beJimmy Howard and Damien Brunner, decide whether to re-sign Valtteri Filppula...

Red Wings Lose Their Edge, 4-2 to Coyotes

The Red Wings put up a pathetic 2nd and 3rd period effort and pay dearly, losing 4-2 to the Coyotes. The Red Wings came out and dominated the entire first period. The pressure in the offensive zone was great and kept providing scoring chances for all of the forward lines. They opened the [...]

Standing pat is probably the worst thing the Wings could’ve done at the deadline

Remember when the NHL trade deadline was a holiday in Detroit? Names like Murphy, Chelios, Schneider, and Stuart came to Detroit via trade for prospects becoming what turned out pretty significant pieces to an elaborate hockey puzzle. Well we’re three years removed from the last impact move for the Wings while fans are reminded of how things once were with the Penguins loading...

Red Wings mid-day mishmash: on the Gordie Howe movie, injuries, personnel and funny Tweets

The Red Wings won't take to the ice to prepare for tonight's game against the Phoenix Coyotes (10 PM EDT, FSD/NHL Network U.S. and the Center Ice/GCL blackouts that come with an NHL Net game/97.1 FM) until around 2 PM EDT, but the Red Wings' website and DetroitRedWings.com's Bill Roose area already in game-day mode... Good morning, Phoenix, where the @detroitredwings...

Red Wings-Avalanche Preview

The Detroit Red Wings' quest for a 22nd straight playoff berth appears to be going down to the wire. The visiting Red Wings know they probably can't afford to lose to the NHL's worst team Friday night when they try to complete their first season sweep of the Colorado Avalanche in five years. Detroit (18-14-5) is in seventh place in the crowded Western Conference. Eighth...

Talking Red Wings fans down from the ledge after what didn’t happen on deadline day

We’re now more than 24 hours past the NHL trade deadline and by all account Red Wing fans are still running down Woodward acting as if the sky is falling in Hockeytown. Yes the Wings are fighting for their playoff lives and it was another year that Ken Holland didn’t make that big free agent signing or deal at the deadline to fill some of the holes on the roster. And I’m sure...

2013 NHL Trade Deadline: A Red Wings Post-Mortem

I think we all remember the excitement of the NHL trade deadline in 1999. I faked sick getting out of my sixth-grade classes, purely so I could go home and watch ESPN‘s (then) wall-to-wall coverage. When ESPN/ABC had broadcasting rights to the league, they made the trade deadline a HUGE freaking deal; Barry Melrose, Steve [...]

Red Wings-Coyotes quick take: an earned loss

Contrary to what I'm sure will be suggested over the next 24 hours, the Detroit Red Wings' 4-2 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes was not the result of a team collectively and individually choosing to "screw the pooch" to "send a message" voicing their dissatisfaction with the team's management. The Red Wings did not lose because the ghosts of Jay Bouwmeester...
