The Detroit Red Wings are expected to demote goaltender Joey MacDonald to the role of backup when No. 1 starter Jimmy Howard returns from injury, despite MacDonald’s stellar play over the past five games.MacDonald has led Detroit on a five-game winning streak heading into Sunday’s game with the San Jose Sharks. He’s given up just a total of eight goals in that span and got the nod for Sunday’s contest. Howard, who has missed the last eight games with a broken pinkie finger, is expected to be back between the pipes for Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks. He has a 32-11-1 record and a 2.03 GAA – fifth lowest in the NHL.
