While the Coyotes' ownership situation remains in limbo, the team has already locked up general manager Don Maloney and coach Dave Tippett this offseason. And according to a report Saturday night, they might be on the verge of another significant re-signing. TSN's Darren Dreger reported via Twitter that the Coyotes and goalie Mike Smith, who is set to become a free agent on July 5, are close to a six-year contract that would keep Smith with the franchise through the 2018-19 season. Dreger added that the deal, which he emphasized has not yet been finalized, is expected to pay Smith about 5.7 million per season. Sources say the Coyotes are closing in on a 6 year deal with Mike Smith. Not done yet, but believed to be around 5.5 mil per year. TSN Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) June 30, 2013Smith's extension with the Coyotes is still being finalized. Sounds like closer to 5.7 per year x 6 yrs. Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) June 30, 2013 The 31-year-old Smith, who was believed to be seeking a deal worth more than 6 million per season, would have been perhaps the top goalie on the free-agent market, and he and his agent had previously expressed reservations about re-signing given the Coyotes' ownership uncertainty. But the Coyotes have made it clear since the end of their season that bringing Smith back is their biggest offseason priority, and doing so would represent a huge step forward in long-term on-ice stability. Smith had somewhat of a disappointing contract year, finishing 15-12-5 with a 2.58 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage in the 41-game lockout-shortened season. He also missed several games with a groin injury. He set the bar high the previous year, though, his first as a full-time starter, when he posted a 2.21 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage while leading the Coyotes to the Western Conference final.
