According to Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Flyers are close to coming to terms with defenseman Bruno Gervais. Gervais spent six years with the New York Islanders and was traded last season to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Once the Flyers were scorned by Ryan Suter earlier today, the Flyers found themselves scrambling for defensive help and turned their sites on Gervais.

Gervais is 6’1″ and weighs 205 pounds. He is 27 years old. His cap hit last season was $525,000. Gervais scored 6 goals and 13 points in 50 games with the Lightning last year.  In 7 NHL season, Gervais has amassed 15 goals and 81 points and is a career -64. He is a right handed shot, which is a plus for the Flyers.

The move to sign Gervais, which according to Carchidi could be announced tonight or tomorrow morning could preclude the Flyers from re-signing Matt Carle. Carle is undoubtedly the better player, but his price tag has been pumped up by the Suter signing in Minnesota earlier today and defenseman Dennis Wideman’s signing in Calgary. Wideman is a similar player to Carle, but not as good. He signed a contract for an average annual value of $5.25 million.

Instead of being able to sign Carle for $4.5 million like they likely could have before free agency, it appears he is now looking for more along the lines of $5.5 million. That may have priced him out of the Flyers plans.

In Gervais, the Flyers get a veteran defenseman that will be much less costly and could save the Flyers some money to apply elsewhere. With that said, you get what you pay for, and Bruno Gervais may be a cheaper option, but there’s a reason for that.
