Sergei Gonchar played for Metallurg in the KHL during the Lockout. Could he be making a return there? (courtesy of crosbyftw.com) Could Sergei Gonchar be leaving the friendly confines of Scotiabank Place in Ottawa for his homeland Mother Russia? Reports from multiple sources including NBC Sports and Yahoo Canada have said that Gonchar is indeed close to signing a deal with the KHL’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk, the same team that housed Ryan O’Reilly during the Lockout, and former NHLers Mats Zuccarello and Enver Lisin. Despite the reports, Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review took to Twitter and stated that despite the offers from not only Metallurg but other KHL teams, Gonchar has yet to sign any sort of offer. The 39 year old native of Chelyabinsk, Russia, Gonchar was drafted in the first round of the 1992 NHL Draft by the Gonchar with the Cup in 2009 (courtesy of fantasyhockeynerd) Washington Capitals. A Stanley Cup Champion in 2009 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Gonchar signed a 3 year/$16 million contract with the Senators and played the half of the 2012-2013 season with Metalllurg due to the NHL Lockout. Look for Gonchar’s free agency period to be a continuing story leading up to July 1st, the first official day of Free Agency.  Who, if anyone, is ready to take a chance on a 39 year old defenseman who’s years are obviously behind him knowing that the KHL is willing to throw out more money?

The Dallas Stars acquired the rights to soon-to-be unrestricted free agent defenseman Sergei Gonchar from the Ottawa Senators earlier today, sending a conditional 6th-round pick to the Senators.
