According to a report courtesy David Sanchirico of Sports Illustrated via NBC affiliate King 5, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, admitted that he has held discussions with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, about possibly bringing the Phoenix Coyotes to the city. The mayor says he has already held talks with investors about bringing the embattled franchise to the northwest, where they would play at Key Arena, which has a seat capacity of 11,000. “I let (Bettman) know of the situation here, and that we were supportive of bringing the NHL to Seattle,” McGinn said. “We have Key Arena, so we talked about the potential of them being in Key Arena, while we continue to work on a new arena plan.” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly would not characterize the discussions between McGinn and Bettman, and told KING5 the conversation was “like any number of conversations the Commissioner has all the time with a variety of people.” The Coyotes and the city of Glendale has been given up until June 25th, to come to terms on a lease agreement by the NHL. Bettman has already stated that the team could be on the move if no agreement is in place. Seattle on the other hand, is coming off the disappointment of losing out to Sacramento for possession of the Kings franchise. “McGinn said, while the news is encouraging, “I really want to bring down expectations. We are very clearly Plan B for the NHL and this team. I feel compelled to say this after the experience we had with Sacramento than the likelihood of us having a team here in a couple of weeks is low.”

Coyotes’ fate not necessarily in the NHL’s hands

One way or another, the Phoenix Coyotes' fate will be determined by June 26th of this year, and, as the Globe and Mail's David Shoalts suggests, the NHL won't be making the call: The fate of the Phoenix Coyotes is now in the hands of the (mostly) new city council of suburban Glendale.
