Photo credit: AP Before the season started, Kevin brainstormed how many points it would take to make the playoffs in this lockout shortened season. Kevin concluded that it should take roughly 63 points to lead the conference and 53 points to make the playoffs, or a 1.12 point per game pace. As of today, the Rangers have 18 points in 16 games, averaging 1.13 points per game. That pace would give them 54 points for the season. The Rangers have games remaining and need about 35 more points to qualify for the playoffs. At that rate the Rangers would need an average of 1.09 points per game for the remainder of the season. That’s not exactly difficult for this team. The doom-and-gloom of the Rangers missing the playoffs is pretty ridiculous at this point, especially when you look at the pace the Rangers are on, and how they exploded in the second and third months of the season last year. Since the Rangers started the season 1-3-0, they have compiled a 7-3-2 record and have been one of th...

Musings; Gaborik’s return to form crucial to Rangers

Gaborik needs to step up, the Rangers need him. I almost didn’t want to write this post out of protest at losing valuable sleep having to watch the Montreal game Tuesday night. That said, it probably should have sent me to sleep. Anyway, it’s another musings on another game day. Let’s get at it. Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik need to be much, much better. Inconsistent at...

Quick lineup notes: Asham, Staal, Biron, MDZ

There was a lot going on today in Rangerland, and there may be some significant roster changes for tonight’s game. Per Andrew Gross, the Rangers are dealing with the following injuries/lineup changes: Arron Asham is out with back spasms. Christian Thomas has been recalled to take his roster spot. To make room for Thomas, Rick Nash has been placed on IR, retroactive to last Saturday...

Should the Rangers consider a veteran like Alfredsson?

Former All Star Alfredsson would be a nice fit in NY – depending on cost The Rangers need to get more offense and Chris Kreider needs serious minutes; not just as an injury fill-in. Those two issues, the inconsistent play of J.T. Miller, and the underwhelming performances of  Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik are why the Rangers may want to consider speaking to Ottawa about veteran...

A preliminary look at a possible Brad Richards buy-out

Great teammate, too many years. There is nothing more dangerous in sports than a superstar in his early 30’s coming up for free agency.  At age 31 or 32, he still shows all the skills that made him a star in his prime and makes GM’s salivate at the thought of that “one final piece”.   But we know those skills are fading.  If we are really honest with ourselves, we know...

Nash Put on IR Retroactively to Make Room for Thomas

Late last night, TheNYRBlog's Adam Herman reported that the Rangers have recalled Christian Thomas from the CT Whale. To make room for Thomas, Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record notes that the Rangers have placed Rick Nash on IR retroactively. He would be eligible to come off the IR tomorrow. ...this transaction is not a confirmation of anything related to Nash'...

Game 17: Rangers at Canadiens

Richard Wolowicz/Getty Images North America Tonight the Rangers are in Montreal for a rematch with the Canadiens, but are doing so extremely shorthanded. The Blueshirts will be without Rick Nash (unknown), Darroll Powe (concussion), Arron Asham (back spasms), and may be without Michael Del Zotto (lower body) and Marc Staal (flu). Christian Thomas was called up and will play tonight...

Whale call up Scott Stajcer

The Connecticut Whale have announced that they have recalled goalie Scott Stajcer from the Greenville Road Warriors, the Rangers ECHL affiliate. Stajcer was assigned to Greenville in late October, and went 8-4-3 with a 2.72 GAA and a  .918 SV%. Stajcer was the Rangers fifth round pick in 2009. Tweet

Game 16: Rangers at Ottawa

Scott Levy/NHLI via Getty Images Tonight the Rangers are without Rick Nash as they head to Ottawa, who is without Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza. The Sens, like the Rangers, also had a lot of roster turnover, losing Filip Kuba, Matt Carkner, Zenon Kenopka, and Bobby Butler. All that while adding Nick Foligno, Marc Methot, Mike Lundin, and Guillaume Latendresse. The Sens gave the...

Senators 3, Rangers 2, F/SO

Despite a third period surge with goals from Ryan Callahan and Ryan McDonagh, the New York Rangers lost to the Ottawa Senators in a shootout, 3-2. For a complete box score of the game, check out Yahoo! Sports.  - Felt the overall effort was better in comparison to the Montreal game (a beer league game would have been better), but we've yet to see the Rangers play at the...

Refs Rob Rangers of Two Goals

I'm not one to make excuses. And the Rangers especially don't deserve any when they lose to an Ottawa team playing without Erik Karlsson, Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek, who also lost their starting goaltender to injury in the third period. But they were completely jobbed out of two goals in the third period. The first came on the controversial play early in the period...

Figuring Out New Ways to Win

More than a quarter past the season already, this is something that the New York Rangers need to do if they want to get into the postseason. Tonight, the Blueshirts are in Montreal to take on the Canadiens. These two clubs met on Tuesday night in what was more of a chess match than a hockey game and the Canadiens escaped Madison Square Garden with a 3-1 victory. There is no doubt...

Will Neil Catch Del Zotto With His Head Down Tonight?

Last spring, the Rangers and Senators played a grueling seven game series that at times got pretty nasty with Carl Hagelin injuring Daniel Alfredsson with a hit from behind and Chris Neil concussing Brian Boyle with a hit to the head. Another hit that may still have repercussions is when Michael Del Zotto caught Neil with his head down behind the net in Game 4 and dropped him...

Rangers 0, Canadiens 3

Game Summary: LOLOLOLOLOL Observations: Tough to watch a team that barely plays like they care... Rangers played a good "road period" to start... very physical, 15 hits in the first, kept the Habs chances to a minimum. Rangers led 6-3 in shots. However, the next 40 minutes was easily among the worst I've ever seen out of the Rangers. The second period...

The Hockey Fan

from Will Leitch of Sports On Earth, Tuesday night, I went to the Montreal Canadiens-New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden with Sports On Earth hockey writer Joe DeLessio and I was reminded once again how hockey fans are the greatest fans in the world. There is no such thing as a casual hockey fan. When you go to a baseball game, or a football game, or (especially...

More Offense

If the New York Rangers want to have any kind of chance to both get into the postseason and go far in them, they will need a lot more offense. In Tuesday night's 3-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, the Blueshirts probably had one of their worst offensive performances. There was no sustained pressure, not enough pucks thrown at Canadiens' netminder Carey Price and not enough...
