There have not been many big-name free-agent signings that worked out well for the Rangers in the past 10 years or so. But the biggest and brightest signings that have brought the Rangers organization back to its feet and rejuvenated an entire fan base were the signings of Jaromir Jagr (who has since left), Marian Gaborik, and now, Brad Richards.
In the past, Rangers management had typically traded away the farm on a yearly basis for an over-the-hill veteran or threw everything but the kitchen sink at unrestricted free agents whose best years, more or less, were behind them. But much like the success the Rangers have been having on the ice in recent years, they’ve been having just as much off the ice when it comes to finding young talent and signing unrestricted free agents wisely.
