Mike Richards scored the lone shootout goal in the sixth round as the Los Angeles Kings pulled into a three-way tie for eighth place in the Western Conference with a 3-2 shootout win over the host Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.
Defenseman Slava Voynov and Jeff Carter tallied in regulation, Richards notched an assist and All-Star Jonathan Quick made 35 saves for the Kings, who completed a 2-2-0 road trip with just their second win in eight visits to the United Center.
Los Angeles is tied with Calgary and Colorado for the final postseason spot.
Neither team was able to break through in the shootout until Richards slowed down in the slot and beat Ray Emery to the glove side with a wrist shot. Marcus Kruger was the Blackhawks' last chance, but the rookie lost control of the puck as Quick attempted a poke-check, sealing the win for the Kings.
