This is a story that looks set to run and run, although it must be said that it’s run a fair way already.

The tale is of the trade or the likely trade by the Vancouver Canucks of their goalie Roberto Luongo.

He’s been chased by a few sides but so far nothing has been done and speculation has been rife as to where he will end up.

The latest club to be linked with him is the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have plenty of noises about the possibility of signing him in recent weeks.

The main protagonist from the Maple Leafs end is GM Brian Burke, who will be a familiar face to fans who tune in to watch live hockey online.

He was busy over the weekend and got one good deal done when Toronto acquired promising young forward Luke Schenn in a swap deal with the Philadelphia.

It’s a deal which looks to benefit both franchises, but Burke’s chase of Luongo hasn’t proved as successful so far, with reports that Burke doesn’t think that much of the asking price for the Canucks goalie.

As a result, he feels as though he may well be able to go with the depth that he in the position already.

“From my perspective, rather than strip your organization to fill one positional need, we’ll go with what we have,” said Burke, suggesting that Vancouver were asking for over the odds.

On the other hand, Canucks GM Mike Gillis is not going to give player away, but he’s in a very awkward situation as the player definitely wants a change of scenery.

It’s a situation where everyone has the cards that they have been dealt and they are now just deciding how to play them.

Although Burke has said he is happy with his netminding tandem of James Reimer and Ben Scrivens, there is no doubt that Luongo would be an upgrade in the position and could provide the catalyst that is needed to help the Maple Leafs defy NHL betting tips and make it to the post-season.

Eventually we think Burke will use his wealth of forward talent to bait the hook for the Canucks, and that will see Luongo in Toronto.

It may just take a while for it all to happen, so watch this space.
