Audition time for Ty Rimmer has not come in the form of pre-season games not with the Edmonton Oilers squeezing in essential tune-up appearances for Devan Dubnyk and Richard Bachman. So the Edmonton-raised Grant Fuhr influenced goaltender has instead zeroed in on the shots he’s faced at team practice. “I’m here to get a job” said Rimmer who backed up Dubnyk in Vancouver on Wednesday but didn’t see any action against the Canucks. “I’m looking to get my foot in the door and show the management and organization what I can do.” An undrafted unsigned Rimmer 21 was a late addition to the Oilers rookie camp.He was one of three goaltenders who reported to the Young Stars tournament in Penticton with a tryout contract and was the only one who made it to the main camp. That was largely due to the 29 minutes of play he got in the Oilers game against the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Rimmer stopped all 15 shots he faced in a relief role. Tyler Bunz was pegged for the 4-3 loss. “I have been going day by day” Rimmer said. “I really try not to think about that stuff too much.” Rimmer who spent his last season in the Western Hockey League logging 3836 minutes with the Lethbridge Hurricanes had a look with the Los Angeles Kings organization last year thanks to a connection with Ron Hextall. He played his first professional game during the Manchester Monarchs final regular-season game in May but unfortunately lost his tie to the Kings’ American Hockey League affiliate when Hextall left to return to the Philadelphia Flyers. The Oilers later extended an offer to Rimmer to attend their development camp but he had already committed to the Dallas Stars. Discussions continued long enough for the goaltender to switch gears. “Nothing has really come easy for me. I’ve had to work for everything but I’ve had some good opportunities” Rimmer said. “I was able to make the most of my chances in the Western Hockey League then I finished last season in Manchester” he said. “That was a great experience to get that first pro game.
