In a pretty surprising move, Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff has benched defensemen Tyler Myers in favor of Mike Weber. Myers told WGR’s Paul Hamilton he knew it could happen.

“I knew it was possible, I knew I was on thin ice. This is a step to make sure it opens my eyes and be ready to prevent it from happening again. The way I’ve been playing the last three out of four, it’s not good, it’s not good enough for me. I have to be better, I know that, the coaches know that and until I do, stuff like this is going to happen.”

Myers, who signed a 7-year, $38.5-million extension right before he season began, has not played up to expectations.  Through 16 games, Myers has just four points, and is a minus-3. He has made a few bonehead mistakes, and he knows it. ““There’s a lot of good, but it’s those one or two big mistakes that I have to eliminate from my game. I’m —-ed off and I need to come out the next game and come out and play the way I know I can and to do that, I think playing a lot more physical will help my game,” Myers told Hamilton.

Weber has played in just one game this season, and it was the Sabres’ 3-2 loss against Philadelphia. His physical presence one the ice is something Ruff and the Sabres players are looking forward to seeing.

With Myers out and Weber in, we’ll see how the team responds when they take on Montreal in Montreal tonight at 7:30pm on Versus.
