Ryan Miller made 41 saves, and Alexander Sulzer scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period for the Buffalo Sabres, who earned a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders despite being badly outshot Saturday night. Thomas Vanek and Christian Ehrhoff added goals for the Sabres, who won their second straight game. Buffalo was outshot 43-15 by the Islanders, who dropped their fourth straight. John Tavares and Colin McDonald scored for New York, and Brian Strait had two assists. Evgeni Nabokov made 12 saves for the Islanders, who erased a pair of one-goal deficits but couldn't overcome a third even after Tavares was awarded a penalty shot with 3:53 remaining. The teams were tied 2-2 after two periods largely because of Miller, who made 27 saves through 40 minutes.

Austrian homecoming did wonders for Sabres' Vanek

If not for the NHL lockout, Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek would have missed an opportunity to return home to play in his native Austria. The time off and brief but sweet homecoming last fall did wonders for Vanek in rekindling his passion for hockey and his scoring touch. Vanek's newfound perspective has been on display through the first three weeks of the NHL season...

Mikhail Grigorenko’s Benching “Part Of The Program”

Just what are the Sabres doing with Mikhail Grigorenko? Entering Sunday night’s game against Boston  many were left wondering that very thing after the 12th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft has seen his playing time be reduced each night until he was made a healthy scratch for the contest against the Bruins. Grigorenko skated during warm ups with the team on Sunday night, but...

Kevin Freiheit: Sabres survive storm

The Sabres never have an easy time when facing the Islanders, but they found a way to win on Saturday. Ryan Miller stopped 41 of 43 shots on the night, helping the Sabres put together two consecutive victories since season opening wins against Philadelphia and Toronto. Despite getting outshot 43-15, the Sabres held on and escaped Long Island with a much needed two points at Nassau Colise...

Second Line Foils Miller’s Superb Night As Bruins Beat Sabres, 3-1

The Bruins celebrate Patrice Bergeron’s game-winning goal in the third period of Sunday’s game against the Sabres. Whether it was the benefit of the extra day of rest or the results of cabin fever from Nemo, the Bruins came out flying in a rematch with the Buffalo Sabres last night. Again, it was a flawless third period that propelled the B’s to the 3-1 win and their best 10...

Have Those That Played During the Lockout Had an Advantage?

Today the Sabres face the Islanders in Nassau Coliseum thus completing the first quarter of this lockout shortened season.  It has been a disappointing start, both for the organization with a 4-6-1 record, and for many of the individual players who have struggled mightily out of the gate.  Injuries, a lack of training camp, and the condensed schedule have been the common excuses...

Sabres Still Looking For Answers

Photo Courtesy: Bill Wippert/NHLI via Getty Images Another night, another game in which the offense struggled, the defense was awful, and Ryan Miller had to stand on his head in order to keep the Sabres in contention for a victory. For the third game in a row, and second in as many nights, the Sabres were horribly outplayed by their opponent. But unlike the previous two outings,...

Tim Thomas Traded

Two years ago Thomas was on top of the world, winning the Stanley Cup and Playoff MVP award, today he is a New York Islander. In an intelligent move to free up five million dollars in salary cap space, the Bruins have traded goaltender Tim Thomas to the New York Islanders for a conditional second round draft pick.  Thomas has already said that he is not...

Report: Why Islanders acquired Thomas

Despite trading for former Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Tim Thomas on Thursday, the New York Islanders have no expectation or even intention of ever having him in their net.  For one, Evgeni Nabakov has established himself as the Isles starter this season. For another, Thomas has no plans to return to the NHL, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.  But the move still helps the...

Claude Julien, Adam McQuaid Stress Importance of ‘Sticking With It’ in Win Over Sabres (Video)

Sunday night’s matchup between the Bruins and Sabres was an exercise in determination. The Bruins felt like they dominated play through the first 40 minutes, head coach Claude Julien said, but they were unable to solve Sabres goalie Ryan Miller and break a 1-1 tie. The B’s did not let up, though, and Patrice Bergeron finally snuck a one-timer past Miller with under nine minutes...

Tim Thomas Trade Adds to Bruins’ Cap Space, But Big Move May Not Be Imminent

It’s been fairly evident all along that Tim Thomas wasn’t going to play for the Bruins (or anyone else) this season. The team knew that, and so did the rest of hockey. So it may have been a little puzzling as to why the B’s unloaded Thomas to the New York Islanders for a conditional second-round pick on Thursday afternoon. But it all makes sense when you take into account salary...

Sabres-Islanders Preview

The Buffalo Sabres picked up a much-needed two points their last time out thanks to another big game from Thomas Vanek. The New York Islanders, meanwhile, are counting on a couple of fresh faces to help get them back on track. The Sabres try to build on their latest result Saturday night when they visit the slumping Islanders, who hope both Lubomir Visnovsky and Josh Bailey can...

Ty Anderson: Take Five: Bergeron leads way in win over Sabres

While the Boston Bruins sat and waited for the blizzard that slammed New England and postponed Saturday’s affair against the Tampa Bay Lightning to pass through, Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres were busy (successfully) surviving a 43-shot onslaught from the New York Islanders at the Nassau Coliseum. But as the well rested Bruins made their way to First Niagara Center for...

Anton Khudobin Giving Bruins All They Can Ask For as Tuukka Rask’s Backup

The Bruins probably should have won by three or four goals Sunday night in Buffalo, but Ryan Miller was stellar in net for the Sabres, and only allowed two goals (Boston added an empty-netter) in a 3-1 win Bruins win. Miller made a couple of highlight-reel saves and made himself one of the major story lines of the game. In the process, Miller overshadowed his counterpart at the other...
