Former defenseman Teppo Numminen has agreed to become an assistant coach with the Buffalo Sabres.
Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff made the announcement as the Sabres opened training camp Saturday.
Numminen spent 20 seasons in the NHL before hanging up his skates in 2009. The Finnish native had 117 goals and 520 assists during 1,372 career games.
Numminem missed the 2007-088 season after undergoing heart surgery, but he came back to play in 57 games the following campaign.
