Ryan Miller and the Sabres have been hot, can they keep it up?(Photo Credit: NHL.com)
On Saturday, blue and gold fans had a fun time at First Niagara Center seeing their Sabres 2-1 over the New Jersey Devils. This was Buffalo’s fifth straight win at home, with a 6-0-1 record in their last seven home games. Both goals that night came on powerplays, the first by Matt Moulson at the tail end of the second period, and the second by Matt D’Agostini in the second half of the third period.
D’Agostini was recalled from the Rochester Americans prior to the new year. This was his first goal of the season. After the game he told reporters he’s been focusing on working hard and skating hard and it felt good to contribute on the score sheet.
Another new face on the team was pleased with the game’s result. Zenon Konopka was picked up off waivers from the Minnesota Wild. Konopka is a native of Niagara-On-The-Lake and was excited to be back home.

After the game, he said he was blown away by the atmosphere in his first game as a Sabre and marveled at Ryan Miller’s excellence.
As for that excellence, Ryan Miller made 21 saves that night including an incredible 2-on-0 shorthanded goal. The Buffalo Sabres organization’s twitter account tweeted after the game
#Sabres Interim Coach Ted Nolan says he thought Miller was outstanding tonight, made some saves you don’t see other goalies making #olympian

Miller was named to the USA Olympic Hockey team on New Years Day, along with Jonathan Quick and Jimmy Howard. Miller and Quick were both on the 2010 Olympic Silver Medal team.
In a postgame interview, Miller said “It was a good effort, now we need to keep building.

Zenon Konopka, like a whole bunch of people, had to deal with a travel disaster over the last couple days.
The problem for Konopka: he was trying to make it to Buffalo from Minnesota — the Sabres, his boyhood team, claimed him on waivers and wanted him in the lineup for Saturday.
Here's the blow-by-blow:
The original plan was to fly from Minneapolis to New York City to...
Monday was Sabres’ youngin’ Zemgus Girgensons 20th birthday. So after practice, 20 teammates lined up and Girgensons was sent through for 20 spankings – hockey style.
With the lowest amount of points in the NHL, it’s good to see the Sabres enjoying themselves in some fashion. Ryan Miller took out a bit of frustration on his turn.
[Thanks Buffalo Don]
The Buffalo Sabres have narrowed their general manager search to four candidates, including Bruins assistant GM Jim Benning and Senators assistant GM Tim Murray, a person familiar with the process told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Sabres have not revealed their list of candidates to succeed Darcy Regier, who was fired...
Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers was suspended for three games without pay for his hit to the head of New Jersey Devils forward Dainius Zubrus, the NHL announced Monday. During the third period of Saturday night’s game, the 6-foot-8 defenseman appeared to leave the ice as he launched himself into Zubrus along the boards, connecting with his head. Zubrus remained in the game...
Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen scored at 9:42 of overtime to give Finland its third world junior hockey title, 3-2 over Sweden on Sunday.
Ristolainen picked up the puck along the right boards, beat defenseman Robert Hagg as he cut in front of the goal and slid a backhander under goalie Oscar Dansk's right leg pad. Ristolainen has one goal in 19 games this season...
When a hockey team finds some success, its executives become vulnerable to potential poaching from other organizations. It appears that Ottawa's "zero-year" rebuild -- which started in 2011-2012 and amusingly ended in the same season -- has drawn the attention of the higher-ups within the Buffalo Sabres.
The poaching comes in the form of assistant General Manager...
from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers could face a suspension or fine for his hit to the head of Devils left wing Dainius Zubrus in tonight’s game at First Niagara Center.
The NHL’s Department is in the process of taking a closer look at the hit tonight and we should hear something Sunday about whether Myers will have a hearing. The...
Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers has been given a three-game suspension by the NHL's Department of Player Safety for this dirty hit on Devils forward Dainius Zubrus. I think this suspension is about right. Myers is also a repeat offender.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — A person familiar with the Buffalo Sabres’ general manager search has told The Associated Press that Jim Benning and Tim Murray are among four finalists for the job.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Tuesday because the Sabres have not revealed the list of candidates to succeed Darcy Regier, who was fired in November. The search is led by Pat LaFontaine...
Finland's and Buffalo Sabres prospect defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen scores the game winning goal in overtime, to beat the Swedes. It kind of reminds me of the Sega style dipsy-doodle goal.
Matt D'Agostini's first goal of the season kept the Buffalo Sabres on a roll at home.
D'Agostini's rebound goal at 11:49 of the third period lifted the Sabres to their fifth straight home win, a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night.
''We're never going for pretty,'' D'Agostini said.
Linus Omark found Steve Ott to the...
On Saturday night, Hockey Night in Canada's Hotstove Panel discussed the vacant Buffalo GM gig and highlighted Boston Assistant GM Jim Benning as the lead candidate.
"Well, one of the things that you can normally do over the World Juniors is gossip with all your peers who come to go there and there was a bit of a surprise that Jim Benning, of the Boston Bruins, was...
from the CP at NHL.com,
Mikhail Grigorenko and Eduard Gimatov scored in the first period as Russia sent Canada home without a medal at the world junior championship for a second year in a row with a 2-1 victory in the bronze-medal game on Sunday.
Josh Morrissey made a mostly unemotional game interesting when he beat Andrei Vasilevski 7:10 into the third period, but Canada...
It started out like most other Sabres and Devils games - boring, listless, neutral zone hockey - and had the First Niagara Center dozing off by the end of the first. And while it never quite turned into a barnburner, the Sabres managed to wake themselves up and take control of the last 30 minutes en route to a 2-1 win.
After a first period that had us all questioning our fandom...
