Thomas Vanek scored two goals to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. It was the Sabres' (13-15-4) third straight win in a run that began with an overtime victory in Montreal on Tuesday. Ryan Miller stopped 39 shots in this one for Buffalo. Michael Ryder scored the lone goal for Montreal (20-6-5), and Carey Price made 16 saves. The Sabres broke the scoreless deadlock midway through the second period during a 5-on-3 power play. With Mike Blunden and P.K. Subban in the box, the Sabres tried to find a shooting lane. Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff found one at 10:25, firing a shot from the point that deflected in off Vanek for his 15th of the season.

This is the second Buffalo Sabres post in two days – like it’s almost always sunny in Buffalo.  Sabres winger John Scott was having some fun with teammate Steve Ott during a postgame interview Thursday after the Ott the game-winner in a 5-4 shootout win for the Sabres. It’s only the twelfth win for the Sabres in 31 contests, so they need to enjoy them as they come.  There...

Drew Stafford Scratched, Precursor To A Trade?

Drew Stafford has struggled finding his scoring touch this season. © Dan Hickling A bit of surprising news coming out of Montreal this afternoon after the morning skate as Sabres Alternate Captain Drew Stafford will find himself in the press box as a healthy scratch when Buffalo battles the Canadians tonight at the Bell Center. He joins John Scott and Andrej Sekera as the team...

Vanek Expected To Return Saturday

(Photo Credit: Dan Hickling) Buffalo’s leading scorer is ready to make a comeback. After missing Thursday’s game against Toronto with a lower body injury suffered at the hands of a Christian Ehrhoff slapshot on Tuesday, Thomas Vanek practiced on Friday albeit for 20 minutes. “I feel good. It’s when of those where I got hit right on the bone and it froze me for two days, I...

GARTH: There Goes The Firesale

Just like that, Thomas Vanek scores both goal to deliver his team to a well earned 2-1 win in Montreal. The Sabres have now beaten the Habs twice in their own building this week. Vanek scored the games's first goal by tipping home a Christian Ehrhoff point shot for the PPG. He also scored a beauty heel drag on Carey Price with 38 seconds remaining in the second period. Oh...

Ruff In Tampa Would Be Compelling

Imagine how interesting hockey life would be in Buffalo if a team coached by Lindy Ruff came into First Niagara Center - say, three weeks from today - to battle the Sabres in a game with major playoff implications. With an opening created this morning courtesy of the Tampa Bay Lightning, that scenario may not be so far fetched. Continue reading "Ruff In Tampa Would Be Compelling"

Report: Myers’ Name Is “Out There For Trade”

While it's no secret that Robyn Regehr, Jordan Leopold and Drew Stafford are being mentioned in trade talks, a report last night hinted that the Sabres could be putting a bigger name than all three of them on the block. Continue reading "Report: Myers’ Name Is “Out There For Trade”"

GARTH: Ruff To Tampa?

Tampa Lightning GM Steve Yzerman has fired his head coach, Guy Boucher. The Bolts, like the Sabres, have been a disappointing team for most of this lockout-shortened season. The Bolts find themselves in 14th place (27 points) in the East. Yzerman's team scores goals by the bushels full, however, their team D and goaltending have been awful this season. Is Lindy Ruff the...

Steve Ott is...

The ****** man. Alright, now that I got that out of the way, let's get to the reasons for his sudden rise in popularity in Buffalo. It is a pretty simple formula: Funny, hard working and hard hitting. That's the recipe for succeeding in this town with the minions. It is the reason why fans loved the Nolan teams, Mike Peca, Rob Ray and pretty much anyone who has a few...

Sabres-Canadiens Preview

Montreal's only blemish during its current seven-game points streak came at home to the Buffalo Sabres earlier this week. The Canadians have a chance to avenge that loss as they host the Sabres for the second time in five nights Saturday. Montreal (20-5-5) avenged its only regulation loss in the last 19 games with a 5-2 road win over the New York Islanders on Thursday. The...

Eric Engels: Habs Stumped by Miller, Pittsburgh and Boston Present Biggest Challenges

It wasn't exactly a convincing week for the Montreal Canadiens, but you can't really bemoan their efforts in the two losses they suffered to the Buffalo Sabres. The Habs couldn't buy a bounce Saturday, and Ryan Miller shut the door on virtually all the opportunities they created. There were rebounds that came off of Miller, but he was great on second chance opportunities...

Colton Orr Fights Patrick Kaleta, Bags 29 Penalty Minutes In Just Two Seconds of Ice Time (Video)

Hockey fights are very common, but what is not are the significant events that took place in Buffalo on Thursday night. Colton Orr, who has a total of 1,026 penalty minutes in his 11-year career, recorded 29 minutes in just two seconds of playing time on Thursday. The Maple Leafs’ right winger not only served two minutes for cross-checking Buffalo’s Patrick Kaleta, but he also...

Optimism and Fire Sales

On Wednesday afternoon I opened my mailbox to find a familiar sight, one that I've come to expect every spring for the last six years.  But never has it left me more incredulous. "An invoice for Sabres playoff tickets?  What kind of sick joke is this?" My favorite part was this excerpt from the letter that accompanied the invoice: “With the NHL Playoffs...

Eric Engels: Habs Find Solution for Isles

The Montreal Canadiens have suffered one regulation loss in their last 19 games, and it came against the New York Islanders. For whatever reason, the 23rd-best team (according to the standings) has given the Canadiens fits this season. And that's why a character win born of an offensive explosion in the third period of last night's game was all the more impressive. Take...
