Home cooking can make you sick The weekend is over and the Canucks have started the season 0-1-1. Hit the panic button, right? While some people already have, I would imagine, it could have been a lot worse. Yes – I said that, despite being outscored 9-5 in regulation, it would have been a helluva lot worse. Lets take a minute and pretend that this is October and the Canucks come out of the gate flat, is anyone really surprised? Probably, but that shock will wear off eventually once the team gets their legs and starts playing like a cohesive unit. For now though, we get to take a look at a few positives and negatives from the Canucks opening weekend. On the plus side The Fourth Line If you can look past Manny Malhotra, Aaron Volpatti and Dale Weise having the worst plus/minus on the team (I know, still early), then you can at least look at what good they did. They provided a lot of energy, big hits and the occasional scoring chance. Weise even threw a hit with his face at one point, that’s how into the game he was. (I tried to find some footage of Dale Weise trying, but…you know) Zack Kassian I know that it’s still early, but we got to see a little bit of what Zack Kassian can bring to the table. He had a goal and a fight, four shots and a few big hits. You also can’t over look that he almost gift wrapped Justin Schultz first NHL goal in the second period of Sunday’s game against the Oilers, but all in all, I thought Kassian was one of the better players on the ice. Alex Edler His play at times in the first two games has been a bit shaky, but Alex Edler is tied in points on the team with 3, leading with goals with 2 and is an even in plus/minus. So Edler’s production gets a “plus” from me, but his defensive game, not as such. The downside Andrew Ebbett For me, Andrew Ebbett has been non-existent, both at five-on-five and on the power play. He’s a -1 and has no shots on goal. Once again, I know it’s two games in, but I think it’s time to try something else out. (Jim Vandermeer was placed on waivers this morning, leaving room for a potential recall of Jordan Schroeder) Jason Garrison Is Jason Garrison rusty or is he just not that good of a defenseman? I’m not going to jump on him too much here, as I believe the issue is rust. He’s playing for a new team and with a new system. It’s going to take him a little time to get used to how things are done around here. To his credit, he really does have one helluva shot. He just needs to hit the net a little more. The goalies and the defense I’m not going to crap all over Cory Schneider or Roberto Luongo, hell, I won’t even go off on the D, but they have to play better – plain and simple. That’s all six defenseman and both goalies. I don’t know how many times I have to mention the Canucks are notorious for slow starts, but it’s time to curb that, they have too. In a shortened season these gaffs are magnified and could potentially have far worse results towards the end of the year. That’s it from me today, folks. Let me know who your plus and minuses were.
