With the team slumping - having lost three of the last four games – the Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have made several roster moves.

Brayden Schenn, who was recalled from Adirondack just four games ago, sustained a broken foot last night when blocking a shot against the Montreal Canadiens.  Schenn had not posted a point in the four games, and is tied for a team-worst -5 rating.

In addition, left winger Zac Rinaldo and defenseman Erik Gustafsson were both recalled from the Phantoms.

Rinaldo played in the first five games of the regular season, while Jody Shelley finished serving the remainder of a League-mandated suspension for a  hit from behind in the exhibition season.  The Flyers seemed to have much more jump and energy while Rinaldo was part of the team, and the forward lines have not been effective since his demotion.  The fiery 21-year-old had a goal and two points, as well as 28 penalty minutes in his five-game stint.

Gustafsson is a smooth-skating defender who can really be effective at this time.  The defense has been terrible as of late, guilty of numerous giveaways and blown coverages.  Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has been left to fend for himself in losing his last four contests (0-3-1).

Gustafsson’s coolness under pressure and ability to make a good first outlet pass could come in handy.  Veterans Matt Walker and Andreas Lilja have been awful in most of their recent play.

Here is the official Flyers press release:

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have recalled recalled 5-11, 185-lb left wing Zac Rinaldo and 5-10, 180-lb defenseman Erik Gustafsson from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.  They will both be available for tonight’s 7pm game vs. Winnipeg, with Rinaldo wearing #36 and Gustafsson wearing #26.

Rinaldo, 21 (6/15/90), has appeared in five games for the Flyers so far this season.  He recorded 28 PIM and also picked up his first NHL point with an assist on Oct. 18 at Ottawa.

Gustafsson, 22 (12/15/88) comes to the Flyers for the first time this season.  He has four assists in eight games for the Phantoms so far this season.  Gustafsson appeared in three games for the Flyers last season, and also posted 49 points (5G, 44A) for the Phantoms in 72 appearances in 2010-11.

Holmgren also announced that C Brayden Schenn sustained a broken left foot in last night’s game at Montreal and will be out of action for four to six weeks.  Schenn, 20 (8/22/91), was recalled by the Flyers on October 19 and has appeared in four games, going scoreless.  Schenn has recorded four goals and four assists for eight points in four games for Adirondack so far this season, incluidng a hat trick on October 14 in a 6-3 win vs. Bridgeport.

Additionally, Holmgren updated the status of D Chris Pronger.  “Chris saw Dr. Goldman again today,” Holmgren said.  “He continues to improve daily. Chris will start light exercise on the weekend.”
