As speculated this morning, there was movement among the club’s overcrowded forward ranks.

Rookie wingers Zac Rinaldo and Harry Zolnierczyk were both assigned to Adirondack of the AHL, while Brayden Schenn was recalled from the Phantoms.

Rinaldo’s demotion comes as not too much of a surprise with the return of Jody Shelley from his five-game suspension.  Due to a tremendous amount of special teams play, Rinaldo saw limited ice time in the five contests this season.  But there is no question he made an impact in that brief time frame.

Zolnierczyk was recalled yesterday to fill in for Andreas Nodl, who was scratched with an undisclosed injury.  “Harry Z.” made a nice impression on the Flyers brass, scoring a highlight reel goal with a beautiful backhander over a sprawled Craig Anderson in the game’s final minute of a 7-2 victory in Ottawa.

It was just a matter of time before Schenn was brought up by the Flyers.  He had picked up four goals and eight points in Adirondack’s first four games, which included a hat trick.  The 20-year-old could have began the year in Philadelphia, but his time in the AHL meant that the Flyers wouldn’t have a $1.4 million bonus count against the club’s bloated salary cap.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi, the moves leave the Flyers within about $21,000 of the cap ceiling.

The lines are shaping up as follows:

James van Riemsdyk-Claude Giroux-Jaromir Jagr

Scott Hartnell-Danny Briere-Wayne Simmonds

Matt Read-Sean Couturier-Jakub Voracek

Schenn-Max Talbot-Shelley

Extra: Nodl

It seems strange to rush this move in order to have Schenn play on the fourth line.  Maybe there are more moves to come.
