The 6th Sens:
All but five periods in the second quarter of the season were played without Erik Karlsson, and if you've been watching the games you don't need me to tell you the team looks different now. Shots against have gone up, and the Senators have struggled to create offensive chances for long stretches. Nevertheless the team has stayed in games and picked up points in ones they've lost, so much so that I think at this point I'd be surprised to see them fall out of the playoffs. Still, the totals below are pretty ugly, hopefully it was just a blip, they have certainly looked better as a team with Michalek back in the lineup.
The chance totals from games 1-12 can be found here.
And this is the scoring chance definition I adhere to when tracking games:
"A scoring chance is defined as a clear play directed toward the opposing net from a dangerous scoring area - loosely defined as the top of the circle in and inside the faceoff dots (nicknamed the Home Plate), t...
BEST OF MAXIM
Jakob Silfverberg broke a tie with 4:41 left, and the Ottawa Senators snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the New York Rangers, 3-2, on Friday night.
Silfverberg got a rebound of defenseman Eric Gryba's shot and put it past Henrik Lundqvist for his fourth goal of the season. Zack Smith and Patrick Wiercioch scored in the first period, defenseman Sergei Gonchar had two...
Welcome to the game rookie.
The Ottawa Senators rookie David Dziurzynski finally got his
chance to fight Wednesday night when he dropped his gloves against Toronto
Maple Leafs enforcer Frazer McLaren.
It's a shame that the ensuing concussion he got from being knocked out means he likely will not remember it.
Then again, it might be best if he doesn't remember...
Binghamton, NY, March 8, 2013 – Nathan Lawson made 34 saves for his first shutout of the season, and Fredrik Claesson’s goal only 56 seconds into the game turned out to be the winner, as the Binghamton Senators defeated the Connecticut Whale 3-0 Friday night at the Broome County Arena.
The loss dropped the Whale (27-24-5-3, 62 pts.) into a tie with the Manchester Monarchs...
Craig Custance revealed his rankings for ESPN Insider (behind a paywall) for the top 20 potential rental players for this year’s NHL Trade Deadline.
He prefaced the rankings list by acknowledging that the congested NHL standings means a greater likelihood that there will be less trade activity this season.
From an Ottawa Senators perspective, two players made the...
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN on the fight last night between David Dziurzynski and Frazer McLaren,
The sight of Ottawa Senators forward Dave Dziurzynski lying on the ice, knocked out, after a getting pounded into submission by Toronto Maple Leafs heavyweight Frazer McLaren sickened me to no end.
Oh, wait, no one ever gets hurt in a hockey fight, right?
What a crock.
The Senators played the Rangers tough, as per usual. After the Sens opened up a 2-0 lead, the Rangers showed their grittiness and their willingness to fight back as they tied the game before the first period ended. But in the end, the Sens showed why they are still a playoff team despite being without three of their top players. On to the goals:
Lady luck is mean sometimes.
TONIGHT’S GAME The Rangers will face-off against the Ottawa Senators tonight at Madison Square Garden (7:00 p.m. — TV: MSG Network; Radio: ESPN 98.7), to complete their back-to-back set. I think a lot of credit needs to be given to the Ottawa Senators, who have played very well despite a slew of injuries and continued that trend tonight. They have enough young talent to step in and play a competitive game.
Of course, the Rangers still have superior talent and should be on the right end of a result at home against a young, injured team like this. Still, I don...
