Any day now the Wings are expected to announce that Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history will coach the team during the Winter Classic alumni games at December 31st at Comerica Park. MLive.com reported back on July 10 that Bowman had committed to coaching the Wings against the Toronto Maple Leafs during the alumni games. In addition to Bowman former Wings assistant Barry Smith who served under Bowman will also serve as a coach but what isn’t known is whether or not Bowman will coach both alumni games for the Wings or split time with Smith. In eight years with Detroit, Bowman guided the Wings to three Stanley Cups (1995, 1998, 2002) and compiled a compiled a record of 410-193-98. After the Wings defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals Bowman called it a career winning nine Stanley Cups and 1,244 games. Currently the 78-year-old Bowman is a consultant with the Chicago Blackhawks where his son Stan Bowman is the general manager. Ref: Mlive.com
