Even over the course of a summer in which a new CBA will be negotiated, there’s little doubt that a relatively small pool of puck-moving defensemen who may test the open market—including Nashville’s Ryan Suter, Philadelphia’s Matt Carle, Florida’s Jay Garrison and a player whose playoff performance is significantly damaging his value in Washington’s Dennis Wideman—can and should expect to receive significant raises over the course of contracts which will probably challenge whatever parameters of any restrictions on “lifetime” deals. As the UFA pool is so shallow, however, the statuses of two elite restricted free agent defensemen in Nashville captain Shea Weber and Ottawa Senators defenseman and Norris Trophy finalist Erik Karlsson bear watching closely, and the Ottawa Sun’s rumor-friendly Bruce Garrioch reports that Karlsson’s contract negotiations may be drawn-out (and it is worth noting that Karlsson’s too young to file for arbitration, which would ward off any RFA offer sheets):

Welcome to The Breakdown, a series in which we take a look at each team’s performance from the past season. Each team is graded in different categories, with 0 the lowest and 10 as the highest. Kurt Kleinendorst Not Returning to Coach Binghamton

After two seasons of coaching the Binghamton Senators and leading them to a Calder Cup championship in 2011, head coach Kurt Kleinedorst has confirmed that he will not be behind Ottawa's AHL affiliate's bench next season. Via Joy Lindsay: #BSens Coach Kurt Kleinendorst has confirmed he will not return next season. He has no further comment at this time. #BSens — Joy...

Travis Yost: Ottawa Senators Organization Takes a Hit

Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter! -- On Tuesday morning, Binghamton Senators head coach Kurt Kleinendorst revealed that he would not return in his position for next season, effectively ending his run with the Ottawa affiliate. Kleinendorst added no further comment, but it is expected he'll actively pursuit NHL employment. For the Ottawa Senators, the loss is a massive...

Can the Maple Leafs Draw Hope From the Ottawa Senators?

The Ottawa Senators ended the 2010-11 season in 13th place in the Eastern Conference and 26th place overall in the NHL and looked to be on track for a painful rebuild.  As they entered this past season they were picked by many analysts to be battling for the first overall pick, not the playoffs.  Well Brian Murray, Eugene Melnyk and the rest of the Senators organization proved...

Addressing Ottawa’s Blue Line

If you’ve been a frequent visitor of The 6th Sens over the past few months, you’ve assuredly come across a number of posts that casually mentioned the lack of some high ceilinged defensive prospects within the system now that Erik Karlsson and Jared Cowen are stalwarts amongst Ottawa’s top two pairings.   As often as management have lauded the development and progress...

Pierre Dorion Speaks on the Radio

I'm late getting to this but yesterday afternoon, Ottawa's director of player personnel, Pierre Dorion, made an appearance on the Team 1200's Healthy Scratches. With the NHL Entry Draft less than two months away, Dorion shared his thoughts on the draft and a variety of Ottawa's prospects and players. The following is a transcript of some of the memorable topics,...

Fredrik Claesson Signs ELC

This is your obligatory Fredrik Claesson signed his entry level contract with the Ottawa Senators post. The Swedish defenceman was Ottawa's fifth round selection (126th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and a teammate of Mika Zibanejad's on Djurgardens SEL team... or should I say former Swedish Elite League team? After 36 seasons of playing at the highest level of hockey...

Richard Cloutier: The Daigle Awards

Yep, that's right. Remember Alexandre Daigle, the 1st overall pick in 1993, taken by the Ottawa Senators, who was a total bust? Daigle might not be the worst top pick ever (ummm, Brian Lawton might be worse) but he's close. He's bad enough to have a Hockeybuzz awards show named after him. Why write this blog now? I was watching Ilya Bryzgalov a minute ago stink the...

Travis Yost: UFA Targets: Jason Garrison

Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter! -- When the Ottawa Senators were eliminated from playoff contention in the first-round to the New York Rangers, the usual questions were thrown in the direction of GM Bryan Murray regarding the franchise's off-season approach. Perhaps the most intriguing statement Murray offered was in response to an inquiry about potential UFA targets...
