Ryane Clowe turned in perhaps the biggest play in the San Jose Sharks' 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night - and he did it from the bench.

With Kings forward Jarret Stoll making a rush up ice late in the third period, Stowe reached over the boards with his stick to swipe at the puck, barely catching it and knocking it loose from Stoll.

Three players from the Kings immediately raised their arms to point out the infraction, but neither referee saw the play.

"(He) just poke-checked me, kind of. He definitely got the puck," Stoll said. "I totally over-skated it then. I think it was an odd-man rush but I had a little bit of back pressure behind me. I had a back-checker right there.

"Who knows what would happen on the play, but nobody's ever seen anything like that."

Following the Sharks' victory, Clowe played dumb when confronted by the media about the play.

"I have no idea what you guys are talking about," Clowe said. "I'll have to see the video or something. Someone show me the video."

A league official told the Los Angeles Times that the play was "a missed call" and Stoll conceded that the referees have a tough job to do.

Others on the Kings were not so forgiving, particularly since the loss dropped them into a tie with San Jose atop the Pacific Division.

"I don't see why he shouldn't (get suspended). To me, that's like a guy running down the football field and a guy comes out and tackles him to keep him from getting a touchdown," Kings defenseman Drew Doughty said. "I don't see how this is any different. Maybe the refs didn't see it, but I wouldn't blame them full-out. It's hard to see things like that, especially a stick reaching over the bench."
