Pro Sports Daily:
San Jose Sharks goaltender Antero Niittymaki cleared waivers Thursday.
Niittymaki was placed on waivers Wednesday and has only appeared with the team's AHL affiliate in Worcester this season on a pair of rehab assignments.
The 31-year-old Niitymaki underwent hip surgery in the offseason, and the Sharks are now set with Antti Niemi and Thomas Greiss in net.
"I know they've been working hard to find a place for me to play," Niittymaki said of San Jose's attempts to trade him. "It's probably not as easy as it sounds, because I've been out with the (hip) surgery and I've only played games in the minors."
Niitymaki appeared in 24 games with San Jose last season, posting a 12-7-3 with a .896 save percentage and 2.71 goals-against average.

from Mark Emmons of the Mercury News, Coaches are hired to be fired, or so goes the blunt cliche of big-time sports. The Sharks’ Todd McLellan, though, is one coach who doesn’t buy it.
“If a team is taking that approach, then they shouldn’t hire the guy in the first place,” he said. “I wouldn’t have married my wife if I knew I was going to divorce her eventually, and...
Former Flyer Antero Niitymaki did not like playing for the San Jose organization. He made that clear in his comments after he found out through the media that the Sharks placed him on Waivers.

Oh, the stresses and strains of the family vacation. Arguments about the radio. Kids in the backseat asking "are we there yet?" And, of course, that moment when a Finnish sportswriter calls up and informs you that you're on waivers before your NHL employer does.

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, • A guy on the Leafs’ radar could be San Jose W Ryane Clowe. He has a cap hit of $3.625 million through next season, but the word is he might be someone the Sharks are willing to part with before the deadline.
