Found May 17, 2013 on Minus Twenty-Two:
On Thursday the NHL suspended Sharks winger Raffi Torres for the remainder of San Jose’s second round series against the Kings for a hit on Jarret Stoll in Game 1. We concluded the punishment was a bit of an overreaction by the NHL, a penalty that seemed to discipline the player more for his past rather than the offense in question. If you thought you were mad, imagine how Sharks GM Doug Wilson feels. Actually, scratch that. You don’t need to imagine. On Friday he released a strongly worded statement telling everybody exactly how he feels. (Spoiler alert: he’s pissed.) You’re going to want to read all of this: The Sharks organization fully supports the NHL in its efforts to remove illegal and dangerous hits from the game but we strongly disagree with the NHL’s decision to suspend Raffi Torres. Upon review of the incident, it is abundantly clear that this was a clean hockey hit. As noted by the NHL, Raffi’s initial point of contact was a shoulder-to-shoulder hit on an opponent who w...

How About Some New Rules And Torres Talk Too

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post, * New rule: When a penalty is assessed at the 20:00 mark of a period, the next period shall begin with the faceoff in the offensive zone of the club on the power play and not at the center dot. New rule: When a player intentionally is thrown out of the faceoff circle following an icing in order to give his team a few extra seconds...

Raffi Torres suspended the rest of the second round

I said this the other day. --> I don't know... Raffi Torres doesn't leave his feet, he keeps his elbow in and he attempts to hit him in the torso, I think this call is based on reputation. Just for the record, I am not a Sharks fan by any stretch, I think the Chris Kelly elbow on James van Riemsdyk was worse and there wasn't a suspension for that hit. I am not...

The NHL Needs To Suspend Raffi Torres For A Year

Saying that hockey is a physical game is an understatement. Could you imagine if the NBA allowed Zach Randolph and Kendrick Perkins to start throwing punches in the middle of the second quarter? While fighting may be a necessary part of hockey, there is no spot for vicious hits against defenseless players. Over the past few years, the NHL’s Vice President of Hockey and Business...
