The San Jose Sharks' top line is already peaking just two games into the NHL's lockout-delayed season. Patrick Marleau had two goals and an assist and Joe Thornton had three assists as the Sharks won their second in a row, beating Edmonton 6-3 on Tuesday night to spoil the Oilers' home opener. Logan Couture also had two goals and an assist, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Dan Boyle scored the other goals for the Sharks (2-0-0) who led 6-1 before the end of the first period. ''It's only two games, but we've had a couple of nice wins and put some points in the bank which is important in a season like this,'' said Marleau, who now has four goals and an assist in two games this season. ''My linemates have been playing this year, so it's been up to me to try and play catch-up with them.'' Thornton, who now has five assists, believes it is important to get off to a good start in a shortened season. ''We started off the seaso...

Fantasy Hockey: Scott Gomez signs with San Jose Sharks

I honestly believe Scott Gomez will get his hockey career back on track with the move out West as the newest member of the San Jose Sharks. Fantasy hockey owners should play close attention to Scott Gomez over the next several weeks. If at any time Gomez looks as though he has any of the old skill from his New Jersey days I will be jumping all over him as a hockey pool pick.  What...

Coyotes look to ride momentum vs. Sharks

The Phoenix Coyotes ended San Jose's lengthy reign as Pacific Division champions in 2011-12, but the Sharks have shown that they may be ready to reclaim that crown. Until their most recent game, the Coyotes didn't have the look of a team that was poised to repeat. San Jose will seek to remain unbeaten in its home opener and might have caught a break if Mike Smith can'...

Former Canadiens C Gomez signs with Sharks

The San Jose Sharks signed center Scott Gomez to a one-year contract worth a reported $700,000 on Wednesday. Gomez had spent the past week working out and meeting with the Sharks. He could be slotted on San Jose's third line and the second power-play unit, ESPN.com reported. The Montreal Canadiens bought out Gomez's contract last week. He received a pro-rated $5.5 million...

Scott Gomez signs 1-year deal with Sharks

Veteran center Scott Gomez and the Sharks came to terms on a contract on Wednesday, an expected move several days in the making. The one-year deal is reportedly worth $700,000. To make room for Gomez on the 23-man roster, the Sharks placed Brent Burns on the injured reserve. Gomez, 33, had been working out with the Sharks since the weekend and accompanied the team on their recent...

Sharks crush Oilers behind six-goal first period

EDMONTON -- The San Jose Sharks are made up of some rather old dogs, but they managed to teach Edmonton's celebrated young pups some new tricks Tuesday. The Sharks rolled up a newspaper and smacked the Oilers in the nose, scoring six goals in the first period of a 6-3 rout at Rexall Place. "We got off to a good start," said Sharks coach Todd McLellan, whose club...

In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Gomez, 33, posted 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in 38 games with Montreal in 2011-12. This season, he spent 11...

Life Imitates “Art” As Oilers Employ Flying V

If you blinked you might have missed it, but in Tuesday night's horrific loss to the San Jose Sharks the Edmonton Oilers pulled out a play made famous by Emilio Estevez's Mighty Ducks movies. That's right, the flying V took flight. It was only briefly, and perhaps because it didn't lead to a goal, wasn't used again that game. But after photos have made their...

Sharks 6, Oilers 3

EDMONTON -- The San Jose Sharks rolled into Edmonton and absolutely blew up the Oilers' coming out party, scoring six goals in the first period of a 6-3 rout. The Oilers, coming off a season-opening victory in Vancouver and with five young stars in their lineup, had all kinds of confidence and momentum heading into their home opener, and it was gone in a matter of minutes....

Marleau scores twice, as usual, as Sharks rally past Coyotes

SAN JOSE -- Patrick Marleau is out to change his reputation as a notoriously slow starter during this lockout-shortened season. For the third consecutive game to start the season, Marleau scored two goals, the latest pair in dramatic fashion as the Sharks rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the final half of the third period for a 5-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night. ...

Sharks-Oilers Preview

The San Jose Sharks appear eager to leave behind the memory of a rare first-round playoff exit last season. Paced by some exciting young talent, the Edmonton Oilers might finally have a team capable of ending their lengthy postseason drought. Both teams look to build on season-opening victories when the Sharks try to continue their recent road success against the Oilers on Tuesday...
