Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby was released from the hospital on Tuesday but it could be a lengthy recovery after undergoing extensive dental work and surgery on his fractured jaw after he was struck in the face with a puck off a deflected slapshot during the opening minutes of the team’s game against the New York Islanders on Saturday. Crosby, who provided an update to the Penguins in an email because he wrote he’ll be unable to speak “for another couple days” because his mouth is “pretty swollen right now,” added in the email communication that he is relegated to a liquid diet for the foreseeable future. Yep, according to Crosby, it is going to be “soup and shakes for a while” for him. For those who may not have seen it yet, here’s video of Crosby’s unfortunate mouthful-of-puck experience which left him with the aforementioned broken jaw and with a few less teeth than he began the game with: Ouch. For how much Crosby is criticized, it wouldn’t be appropriate for anyone to wear this shirt given how he responded to getting blasted in the face with a puck. Not only that, this is at least the second time this season Crosby has been hit in the face by a puck. It’s like the puck is attracted to him like a vulcanized rubber moth to a flame, or whatever the heck a moth made out of the same material as pucks would be drawn to. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Dave Molinari reports that Crosby began receiving visitors on Sunday and provides some text from Crosby’s email communiqué: “People have been awesome at the hospital and guys have been in to visit,” Crosby wrote. “Staff [from the Penguins] as well. “[I] appreciate the help from everyone here at the hospital and people visiting. They have done everything they can to make get me healed and feel good, and I appreciate that.”  The Penguins, who are riding high and on a 15-game winning streak heading into its game against the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday, probably will have to do it on their own and not expect Crosby back on the ice anytime soon given that he has been deemed out indefinitely. My guess is until he is able to eat something besides shakes and soup, Crosby’s status will remain the same. Usually, eating solid food and being able to talk would be considered good first steps on the road to recovery after suffering a fractured jaw. But hey, I’m no dental surgeon or whatever.
