The Philadelphia Flyers have continued to struggle early, as they fell behind 3-0 yesterday to the Ottawa Senators and 2-0 today to the Pittsburgh Penguins. I have not hidden my disdain for playing less than 60 minutes of hockey in the past, and I will not be changing my tune now. The Flyers seem to have a mentality of not minding digging themselves holes. They often come out flat and get outplayed early in games. With their backs firmly against the wall, they finally come to life and make a push.

The Flyers have have played well recently when digging holes for themselves, but they absolutely can not continue to do it, especially as the competition increases.

With the playoffs approaching, the time is quickly coming when games will tighten up and goalies will close doors. Defense and goaltending win in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Sloppy defensive zone play and soft goals are a one way ticket home.

The Flyers have a ton of potential to make a deep run in the playoffs. With the playoffs likely to start against Pittsburgh and at some point running through the New York Rangers, it will not be an easy road. But then again, it never usually is. The Flyers can and will make things much more difficult on themselves if they continue to play from behind.

Perhaps the return of Ilya Bryzgalov will sure things up for the Flyers and give them a bit of a boost. The goalie is currently recovering from a chip fracture in his right foot. Maybe when the playoffs start, the Flyers will suddenly understand the value of playing a full game. I don’t see that happening out of the blue though.

Whatever the case, the Flyers will have to figure out how to start better and play a full 60 minutes of hockey. Otherwise, they may find themselves back home before you know it.Similar Posts:
