Now that Mark Messier was passed over for the Rangers head coaching position, you've got to wonder what's next for "The Captain." There's been no word whether Messier intends to remain in his position as special assistant to general manager Glen Sather. Larry Brooks at the New York Post feels that if he's serious about coaching in the NHL, the Rangers should get him experience by making him the head man down in Hartford, while Elliotte Friedman at CBC Sports doesn't think Messier would be a good candidate to replace Glen Sather as it wouldn't be ideal for Alain Vigneault to report to the man who wanted his job. Andrew Gross has noted that Jeff Gorton is likely next in line for Rangers GM. ...i think Messier can pretty much decide what avenue he wants to take and Sather will do everything in his power to make it happen. If he ultimately wants to become a coach in the NHL, I don't see how Sather doesn't offer him the job in ...

Lundqvist: I didn’t have Torts fired

Per Larry Brooks, Henrik Lundqvist made his first public comments since his “Comments heard ’round the world” that set all of New York into a panic. Per Brooks, Lundqvist denied having any say in the decision to fire John Tortorella: “I know there is some speculation regarding Torts being fired, but let’s be clear on one thing,” Lundqvist said via an e-mail on Wednesday...

What a Hagelin Bridge Deal Might Look Like

While not as critical as re-signing fellow RFA’s Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh, Glen Sather must also set aside the time and cap space to get Carl Hagelin under contract this summer. Unlike Step and McD, however, the jury is still out as to whether Hags is a building block player or someone the Rangers [...]

Slats: Style of play had Tortorella fired

(Gerry Kahrmann, The Province) Pat Leonard of the Daily News sat down with Glen Sather yesterday, and the Rangers GM was very candid about the decision to relieve former coach John Tortorella of his duties. Slats said that the “style of play had a lot to do with it” in reference to the dismissal of the coach. Leonard was able to get more details from the GM as well: “If you...

Stay or Go: Taylor Pyatt

{Jared Wickerham/Getty Images North America} Usually when we do our stay or go posts, we look at pending UFAs to see if the Rangers should spend the money to keep these players around. Last week Suit wrote a stay or go for Brian Boyle, as Boyle is the subject of a lot of discussion, and I’m going to piggy-back on this. Many know that I’m a Boyle supporter, and with AV –and his...

Should the Rangers Bring Mats Zuccarello Back?

Popal: Derick Brassard Could Be The X Factor the Rangers Need to Keep

When rumors were swirling that Marian Gaborik and then New York Rangers coach John Tortorella had a strained relationship Gaborik was shipped to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Derek Dorsett, John Moore and Derick Brassard. Not much was known about the three, but one of them sure wanted to stand out and that player was [...]

Flyers Would Absolutely Be Interested in Richards; Briere to Rangers?

Sam Carchidi at the Philadelphia Inquirer says that with the Flyers likely to buyout Danny Briere and his $6.5 million per year cap hit, they would  “absolutely” be interested in Brad Richards if he is amnestied by the Rangers. ...a cheap, motivated Richards on a Rangers rival? Ugh. Talk about nightmare scenario. Could only hope his Drury imitation would continue in Philly...

Could Messier Leave Rangers Organization?

According to Glen Sather, the decision to hire Alaine Vigneault might put Mark Messier's future with the Rangers in doubt (via New York Post)... “I don’t really know what Mark is going to do. He was very disappointed when I called to tell him that we were going to hire Alain. “He said he wanted to take a few days and would call me, but we haven’t spoken since...

Sather Blames Lack Of Offense And Puck Possession On Tortorella, Not Himself

With Henrik Lundqvist telling the New York Post's Larry Brooks that he had no involvement in the firing of John Tortorella the fire was once again stoked. If Lundqvist did not request the change, then who did? Did anyone? Glen Sather sought to clarify that when he spoke to NYDN beat writer Pat Leonard. Sather said that no player specifically asked for the move but that he and...

2013 draft preview: Hudson Fasching, Zach Sanford, Spencer Martin

It’s hard not to root for Hudson Fasching. With a new coach on board, the next order of business this offseason will be the NHL Draft, coming up on June 30th.  The Rangers don’t have first or second round choices thanks to trades for Rick Nash and Ryane Clowe, but they do have three third round picks.  The good news is that the 2013 draft is considered extremely deep, but by...

Rangers’ Lundqvist says that he didn’t demand Tortorella’s ouster; Vigneault to be hired Friday

Amidst the theories that certain New York Rangers players encouraged the team to part ways with John Tortorella, Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist assured the New York Post's Larry Brooks that he neither encouraged the management to fire Tortorella, nor did he threaten to not re-sign with the team after his current contract expires next summer should the team retain Tortorella...

What Area Of The Rangers Needs To Be Improved The Most

Glen Miller: Assuming the Rangers feel they are close to competing for the Stanley Cup next year, they will need to prioritize adding more size and toughness to the lineup to help them get over that hump. Ideally, anyone they do add will also bring a touch of skill to the table as well. Look [...]

Lundqvist Says He Wasn't Behind Torts Firing

Henrik Lundqvist spoke for the first time on John Tortorella's firing telling Larry Brooks at the New York Post that despite the rumors he had nothing to do with the former Ranger head coach's release... “I know there is some speculation regarding Torts being fired, but let’s be clear on one thing. “I would never put pressure on the management on decisions...

Rangers Will Have A New Look

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post, A more traditional — but not loose — defensive zone structure should give wingers more time and space through the neutral zone and on the entry. It should play to the strengths of Chris Kreider, a great skater with a big-time shot who is far better getting the puck on the wing in open ice than hunting for it along the boards and below...
