Olympic hockey in the preliminary rounds of the Sochi Games has seemed oddly physical - more than you'd expect from guys who still have to report back to their NHL clubs this month. Team USA players say the games are physically intense because that's what they want. Forward Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings says the U.S. is running a system that is designed for more physical play, to allow the team to be more aggressive in certain situations. ''We have layers - you beat one guy and there's another guy in your face,'' Brown said. ''The support is really there and really working well right now.'' Brown said his team, which earned a spot in the quarterfinals after winning three games in preliminary play, has developed into a hard-nosed team with players diving in front of shots and frustrating their opponents. ''That's a part of the game here in a short-term tournament, is imposing your will on other players and other teams,'' Brown said. ''It can have a lasting effect not only on the team you're playing but on the other teams that you're preparing to play.'' - By Oskar Garcia - Twitter --- Associated Press reporters are filing dispatches about happenings in and around Sochi during the 2014 Winter Games. Russian player suggests Jonathan Quick dislodged net intentionally

Russian defenseman Slava Voynov is teammates with Jonathan Quick on the Los Angeles Kings, but that didn’t prevent him from calling out the United States goaltender after Saturday’s game. The American goalie slid to his left to make a save during the third period, and his leg dislodged the net slightly. The referees didn’t pick up on it right away, and as play continued, Russian...

Why the Success of Drew Doughty Isn’t a Surprise – Hockey Freeze

Who would’ve thought that Canada’s hero to this point in Olympic competition would be Drew Doughty? With a team that features names such as Sidney Crosby, John Tavares, and Ryan Getzlaf, Team Canada has a 24-year-old defenseman to thank for their bye to the Quarterfinals in Sochi. That’s because Doughty accounted for both Canadian goals, including the overtime game-winner...

Eklund: Poll> Does Miller Get A Shot?

Quick question here as I am about to head back into a meeting with a key source. (rumor chart and blog update later on...) USA/Russia. WOW. This was a classic game and a gutsy game by so many players on Team USA. Guys like JVR, McDonaugh, Pavelski, Kane and of course TJ Oshie somehow willed this win like a Phoenix from the ashes... But none of it happens without Jonathan...
