It’s not easy being an NHL official, especially when you’re called upon to break up a fight between two players in 40-pounds of hockey equipment as they swing wildly at each other.  Things get a bit crazy, and if you’re not careful, you can end up taking an inadvertent shot to the face.  Or two, like linesman Darren Gibbs did in last night’s Vancouver/Minnesota tilt.

Late in the third period, with the Wild up 4-1, Maxim LaPierre and Cal Clutterbuck got into a dust-up in front of the Vancouver bench.  Gibbs tried breaking up the two heavyweights, and when he did, ended up on the receiving end of a couple of Clutterbuck haymakers.

Gibbs was able to shake off the first one, but the second one was a bit harder, and right on the button to boot, and the battered linesman had to step away and regroup before reentering the fray.

Video follows the jump…

It’s situations like this that make me think referees and the like deserve some sort of hazard pay. Props to Gibbs for taking not one, but two, punches from a tough guy like Clutterbuck. You know they had to hurt.

The Wild ended up winning 5-1.
