The Flyers began their offseason re-modeling of the roster by trading for a veteran defenseman Wednesday.
The Flyers shipped a fourth round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft to the New York Islanders for Mark Streit.
Streit, 35, is a pending unrestricted free agent, but the Flyers now own his rights and will have an opportunity to sign him to a new deal before he hits the free agent market July 5 and could sign with any of the 29 other teams in the NHL. He made $4.1 million last season as a member of the Islanders.
“Mark is a player we would have had interest in on July 5th," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "We now have exclusive negotiating rights and we are hopeful that we can get an agreement in place prior to him becoming an unrestricted free agent.”

On Wednesday afternoon, the team announced they had traded for the rights to defenseman Mark Streit from the New York Islanders in exchange for a 4th round pick in 2014, and prospect Shane Harper.
While it was no surprise to many of us that Mark Streit would be testing the waters of Free Agency and had turned down the NY Islanders best offer, general manager Garth Snow hates letting an asset go for nothing.
Early today word come that he had indeed made at least something out of nothing. Snow had traded Mark Streit's rights for a fourth round selection in 2014 and a...
So the Flyers now own Mark Streit's rights.
I know people talk about the entire Dan Hamhuis rights' debacle but that was because the Flyers didn't believe the rumors he never wanted to play in Philly. They were true as the club found out.
Streit wants to be a Flyer. Which means he will sign. I'll bet the few Canadian dollars I have left from the last Ottawa...

For most, the offseason begins once the Stanley Cup Finals conclude. But after a rare playoff-less season for the Philadelphia Flyers, Paul Holmgren and Ed Snider clearly could not wait even that long.
Only hours before the puck dropped for Game One of the championship series between the Chicago Blackhawks...
The Flyers will have some decisions to make on defense if and when they get Mark Streit signed to a contract. Specifically, it seems likely that one of either Andrej Meszaros or Braydon Coburn may not be back next season even if the club uses both of its buyouts (likely on Danny Briere and Ilya Bryzgalov) to free up over $10 million of cap space. The club also needs to determine...
