Via RedWingsFeed, the Free Press's Helene St. James reports that the Red Wings have in fact decided to keep Brian Lashoff on the team's roster as they know their four on-paper demotions to Grand Rapids (of Lashoff, Danny DeKeyser, Brendan Smith and Gustav Nyquist) mean that the team cannot recall any demoted players unless there is a "roster emergency" (i..e. the team believes that it cannot dress 12 forwards, 6 defensemen or 2 goalies) from the trade deadline until the Grand Rapids Griffins' playoff run ends. As such, Wings GM Ken Holland told St. James that the Wings simply can't afford to essentially lose Lashoff for the remainder of the regular season and any potential playoff run: “It was just a misunderstanding with Mike Babcock,” general manager Ken Holland said Monday. “I agree with him that we’d rather have Lashoff playing in the minors than not playing in Detroit, but the rules don’t allow it. We don’t want to not be able to recall him unle...

Hopelessness In Hockey Town

Playoff hockey and Hockey Town go together like peanut butter and jelly. Detroit has missed the playoffs just once since 1991. Even more impressive is that they have gotten knocked out in the front round just three times since 1995. This year however, the Red Wings are feeling blue. The Detroit Red Wings and goalie Jimmy Howard agreed to a $31.8 million, six-year contract Tuesday, keeping him off the market as a free agent this summer. The 29-year-old Howard is in his fourth season as the Red Wings' top goalie. ''We're extremely pleased to have Jimmy under contract for the next six seasons,'' general manager Ken Holland said. '...

Amongst this afternoon's Red Wings-related news stories: The Wings didn't practice after completing a slate of 3 games in 4 nights with a win against Nashville, and it has yet to officially sign Jimmy Howard (the deal's "done in principle") or officially assign Brian Lashoff to Grand Rapids (though his name no longer appears on the team's active roster...

There may be hope on the Pavel Datsyuk front

As Paul noted, the CBC's Elliotte Friedman posited his weekly "30 Thoughts" column this afternoon, and one of his "thoughts" should put Red Wings fans at some ease: Pavel Datsyuk's agent, Gary Greenstin, was in Toronto visiting client Mikhail Grabovski. We talked about rumours Datsyuk will play the last year of his contract next season, then go back...

Can the Red Wings hang on and make the playoffs?

It’s a fair question to ask. Detroit is playing for their playoff lives and in danger of missing the postseason for the first time since the 89-90’ season. That’s before Lidstrom made his way to Detroit and back when Head Coach Mike Babcock was 2-years removed from his minor league hockey career that ended in 1988 with the Whitley Warriors. In fact it’s been so long since...

The Huskies (and Red Wings prospect Nick Jensen) lose their locks

Those of you who watched Saint Cloud State University play in the Frozen Four, or in any college hockey game this season, probably noticed that a significant chunk of their roster sported shoulder-length hair under their helmets. It turns out that the players, including Red Wings prospect Nick Jensen, were growing out their hair for Locks of Love, and on Sunday, the Saint Cloud...

The Detroit Red Wings earned two points they desperately needed at Nashville, putting them in eighth place in the Western Conference standings. The streaking Dallas Stars, Columbus and Phoenix are all right behind Detroit. The 48-game, lockout-shortened sprint of a season is nearing a fantastic finish with only one team in each conference eliminated as of Monday morning. In the...

The Red Wings got their first win in four games, the last two shootout losses, and moved into sole possession of eighth in the Western Conference two points ahead of Dallas and Columbus...

Red Wings-Flames Preview

While some players may not like to admit it, Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard isn't shy about checking the standings and out-of-town scoreboard as the Red Wings fight to extend their 21-season playoff streak. He may not like what he sees after Wednesday night's contest if visiting Detroit can't get past a Calgary Flames team that has won both meetings this season. &...

It’s Been A Struggle For The Wings

from Damien Cox of the the Spin at the Toronto Star, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg have had to shoulder more of the burden than ever before. Detroit's dearth of high-end young talent after years of drafting either poorly or out of range of the best kids has finally began to impact its lineup. Injuries have hurt. Damien Brunner got hot and then he cooled. Jonas Gustavsson...

Red Wings-Flames set-up: we’re already in must-must-win-tonight territory

The Detroit Red Wings flew out to Calgary after a brief practice and the announcement of Jimmy Howard's contract extension on Tuesday, and tonight they'll tangle with a team they simply must defeat in the Calgary Flames (FSD Plus/TSN/97.1 FM). I'm sure the Wings did some scoreboard-watching on Tuesday evening, and while the 20-15-and-7 Wings remain in 8th place in the...

Did Wings’ rookie Danny DeKeyser make an incredibly smart pass or just get lucky? (VIDEO)

via YouTube The Red Wings signed former Western Michigan defenseman Danny DeKeyser hoping to boost their back line.  While no one expected the 23-year old to light the world on fire, he is expected to contribute on a nightly basis.  Sunday during the Nashville Predators, DeKeyser officially notched his first NHL point with an assist on Henrik Zetterberg’s second period goal....
