I Got The Blues

Oh thank god this game didn’t go to overtime.

The St Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks locked horns in a must-see Thursday game if you had to get up really early Friday morning and were having trouble falling asleep so early in the evening.

The game was less of a playoff preview and more of a playoff warning that if you thought a series against Nashville was boring, the Blues say hi.

Still, a win, cool. Even cooler, it’s time for the St. Louis Blues vs. Vancouver Canucks Love ‘Em/Hate ‘Em.

Love Em

1. The Hit Parade

I have no idea if Zack Kassian will outscore Cody Hodgson, but he’ll certainly outhit him. Kassian was a force for his second straight game and already is quickly becoming a fan favourite.

The outcry over the Hodgson trade has sometimes centred on giving Cody away, but Kassian is quickly proving that he’s more than a bag of pucks. Mike Gillis must be a big TLC fan because his trading mantra for Hodgson was evidentially “No Scrubs”.

2. No Goals on Luongo

His strong play again flew under the radar, but Roberto Luongo‘s 58th career shutout was beautiful and flawless. I’ve been talking a lot about how Luongo is playing the best hockey of his career, and this game was his season in a microcosm.

No mistakes, no drama, just pure technically sound goaltending. October is such a distant memory.

3. Clutch Burrows

Who else but Alex Burrows was going to step up in the third and finally break the deadlock? The feisty Frenchman once again utilized his ball hockey handling skills to fire home a ricocheting puck and win a game that was both first goal and last goal wins.

In the process, he helped the Canucks gain some separation from both the Blues and Detroit Red Wings for top spot in the West and top spot in the league.

All they do is win.

Hate Em

1. This Game Had No Goal In Life

Was this hockey or soccer? nil-nil after 45 minutes? Yeesh.

When We Win...You Win! Blues vs. Canucks Love’ Em & Hate’ Em

I appreciate a good sludge-fest as much as anybody but this was tough. The Blues’ trapping plus the Canucks just got home fatigue was a dreadful combination.

Put the Blues with the Dallas Stars and the Phoenix Coyotes and the legacy members Nashville Predators in the category of playoff series I never want to see.

2. Wait, the Canucks Have No Goals Either

All of a sudden, the Canucks have 9 goals in 6 games which is about the pace they had during the Stanley Cup Finals. Thankfully, new acquisition Sami Pahlsson is an offensive wizard and should help those to– oh wait nevermind.

Is this a problem? This seems like a problem to me. Related, can someone page the Sedins and tell them to pick up the white courtesy phone?

Don’t think Vigneault is pleased with your play guys, I’m pretty sure he’s just high all the time now.

3. We Have to Get Him Backes

David Backes put his best foot forward in welcoming Zack Kassian in his first home game with a a friendly slewfoot.

Even Alex Burrows agrees.

Hey Zack maybe you should have fought him? I hear you can do that. I really am waiting with anticipation to see you fight.
