Before the puck even dropped on Saturdays regular-season finale with the Detroit Red Wings, the Dallas Stars were already in the news because of a report by TSN's Darren Dreger that said club general manager Joe Nieuwendyk would be fired and replaced by Jim Nill, current assistant GM of those same Red Wings. The club refused to comment and nothing was official until Sunday morning, when a press release confirming that Nieuwendyk had indeed been relieved of his duties was issued by the Stars organization. "Joe Nieuwendyk has represented the Dallas Stars extremely well as the club's General Manager and has helped put pieces in place that will once again turn this team into a contender," Dallas Stars owner Tom Gaglardi said in a statement on the teams official website. "I would like to thank Joe for his contributions to this hockey club and wish him and his family only the best in the future. "However, I believe it is time to take this organization in a d...

Nieuwendyk Feels Progress Has Been Made In Dallas

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News, Joe Nieuwendyk was officially informed Saturday of owner Tom Gaglardi’s decision to go with a new general manager, but said he sensed there was a change afoot for some time. “I think it’s important for Tom to pick the people he wants involved in the hockey department,” Nieuwendyk said Sunday in Frisco. “Tom could have...

New Stars GM Jim Nill not ready to decide on coach

The Dallas Stars have a new general manager. Jim Nill isn't ready to say if he'll have a new coach. Nill was introduced Monday after spending the past 15 years as an assistant GM with the Detroit Red Wings, who just extended the longest playoff streak in North American pro sports to 22 seasons. Bag of Pucks: Nill in, Nieuwendyk out for Stars

It was a bizarre night on Saturday evening when the Stars were playing out the string against Detroit in an arena full of red and equally of defeat for anyone who loves hockey in Dallas. For what seems like the umpteenth time in a row, the Stars fight and claw and come up short. Actually, it was only the 5th season in a row, but after they spoiled us by showing success virtually...

Red Wings make playoffs for 22nd season, will face Anaheim after defeating Dallas

I'll write a quick take in a little bit, but after a nail-biting season and a nail-bed-biting last week, the Red Wings--perhaps despite themselves--earned what Ken Daniels duly noted was the team's first 4-game winning streak of the season, defeating the Dallas Stars 3-0 and setting themselves up for their 22nd consecutive playoff run. The Wings will now fly home for the...

Admirals take Game 2

12:04 in the second period, Austin Watson unknowingly scored the game winner that would tie the series up at one between the Milwaukee Admirals and Texas Stars. Mike Liambas’ shot was blocked by Watson cutting through the slot and he snapped the puck past Nilstorp’s blocker. Watson’s goal was enough for Magnus Hellberg, who recorded a shutout by stopping all 23 shots...
