Stephen Weiss will turn back the clock before resuming his future with the Red Wings. On Saturday against the Lightning, Weiss missed his 26th consecutive game because of a sports hernia, but he’s back at practice. “So far so good,” Weiss said. “No major setbacks. That’s all positive.” Weiss signed a five-year deal for just less than $5 million per season. He has two goals and two assists in 26 games. “It’s been a tough stretch the last while for me,” Weiss said. “To be out with the team the last few days has been nice, kind of perks you up a bit. It’s tough skating on your own for a while.” He will begin skating with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League on Tuesday, then the following week will play “a game or two” with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. “I’m really looking forward to it,” Weiss said of skating with the Whalers. “It should hopefully spark something.” Weiss said he still has a good relationship with the franchise. He played for the Whalers in 1999-2002 and ranks 11th on their all-time list with 223 points (89 goals, 134 assists). What does Weiss hope to accomplish when he returns to the Wings after the Olympic break?
