The Toledo Walleye of the ECHL unveiled what will be a Christmas jersey for the ages. Other Ugly Christmas hockey sweaters making the rounds are the Knoxville Ice Bears, the Reading Royals, Lake Erie Monsters, and Wilkes-Barre Penguins.
Our friends at the PensBlog took a trip down memory lane today. It’s hard to imagine how far the Penguins franchise has come the past seven years. If you’re one of the younger fans, this post will help put in perspective how bad things were and how close the Pens were to leaving. If you’re a long time fan, maybe this post will flat out depress you or make you grateful for what you have now.
Darryl Sutter, head coach of the LA Kings, thinks the NHL should get rid of penalty boxes and sell those seats to fans.
Matt Niskanen has been an unsung hero for the injury-plauged Penguins.
The Wheeling Nailers have a crazy amount of players who have played in the NHL. Philip Samuelsson and Zach Sill are two of the three former Nailers that have made the jump to the show this year alone.
Minnesota Wild goaltender, Josh Harding has had a phenomanal year so far, but his season has been put on hold until after Christmas as he acclimates to a new treatment for multiple sclerosis.
If you’re still unfamiliar with who exactly is playing on the Pens defense right now, check out this read from The Hockey Writers. It details the original plan as well as what each of the Wilkes-Barre guys bring to the table.

Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff parlayed his strong play into a brand new two-year contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

from Craig Custance of ESPN,
It's not easy for a defenseman to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year. Just ask the Minnesota Wild's Jonas Brodin, who wasn't even a finalist last season.
However, what Olli Maatta and the Pittsburgh Penguins are doing right now, a six-game winning streak with a defensive group decimated by injury, is the kind...
The game ended with Olli Maatta holding the puck. Fitting because this game belong to him.
And, oh yea. The Pens won again this time beating the surprising scummy Wild 5-2. Goals from Dupuis, Niskanen, Sutter, Kunitz, and Maatta paced the Pens. Zatkoff with his six straight win.

Throughout the 2013-2014 NHL season, I’ll be posting player features each Friday. This week, we’re going to take a look at Brandon Sutter.
It can’t come as a surprise that, after the week he’s had, Brandon Sutter is this week’s feature. Each (healthy) Penguin is utilizing their time to...
One would think that having premium seats on the glass for Wednesday’s New York Rangers-Pittsburgh Penguins tilt at Madison Square Garden would inspire even the most underwhelmed and difficult-to-impress attendee to at least, you know, turn and face the action occurring directly in front of them. But not this young Rangers “fan.” Look at how […]The post Not impressed: Kid...
Jeff Zatkoff had never played an NHL game before this season.
He now has eight under his belt, and a new two-year contract with the Penguins.
Zatkoff, who has emerged to provide stability in goal behind starter Marc-Andre Fleury, has agreed to a two-year deal that will count $600,000 annually against the salary cap starting next season. The overall value of the deal is $1.2 million...
Sidney Crosby scored his 20th goal of the season Saturday, helping the Pittsburgh Penguins win a season-high seventh straight game with a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames.
The Penguins led 4-1 late in the second period and had to hold off the Flames for their 10th straight win at home and 12th victory in their last 13 games.
Crosby, who had a goal and two assists, extended his...
Sometimes going streaking is ugly. Certainly wasn’t the best game they’ve played but the Penguins extended their win streak to seven games and still haven’t lost to the Flames since 2005. As a bonus to that, no one got seriously hurt. Matt Niskanen and Olli Maatta both had times where they left the ice and…
Coming into the season, the story was whether or not Jeff Zatkoff would even be able to hold the fort until Tomas Vokoun came back from injury. Retirement talks from Vokoun and six straight wins from Zatkoff has ended all of that. He inked a two year extension for the Penguins reportedly worth $600,000 per…
The Flames put up a hell of fight. But it wasn't enough.
The Penguins, playing in their final home regular season game of 2013 , held on to extend their winning streak to seven games, and their home winning streak to 10 straight.
Again, playing with one basic NHL line, the Pens found a way. Goals from Harry Z, James Neal, Crosby, and Dupuis were just enough.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will spend much of the upcoming holiday season on the road, but they'd like to bring their lengthy winning streak with them.
The short-handed Penguins try to make it seven straight victories overall and 10 in a row at home Saturday against a Calgary Flames team they haven't lost to since Sidney Crosby's rookie season.
There is something far more important going on right now than just winning. Think forward to mid-April. Game 1 of a playoff series. The Penguins defense will look something like this:
The Niskanen/Maatta pairing is the highlight. There is no telling where things will go, but if the Pens...
