About a week ago, Souvenir City wrote an article about how the NHL should make visors mandatory (you can read it here in case you haven’t read it yet).  I agree completely with what our resident Blackhawks fan had to say.  Having started my hockey watching career with college hockey at Mariucci Arena (and before that high school hockey in the White Bear Lake Bears futile attempt to win a MSHSL championship), I’m used to seeing players in a full Itech shield or a cage.  In fact, by now, I’d guess most hockey fans are used to seeing players in a half-shield and understand why they are a good thing for hockey.

Unfortunately, not every hockey fan or announcer agrees with this.  Take everyone’s favorite hockey curmudgeon, Mike Milbury.  On Saturday’s CBC broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada, old Mad Mike came up with a doozy of a reason why visors should not be mandatory.  His logic:  It would start the NHL on the road to banning fighting, and (this is the best part) he see’s bloodied players as a badge of honor and courage (the full conversation is available here).  Yep, pretty much the reasoning I’d expect from Mad Mike.  I’m just surprised that Don Cherry hasn’t chimed in yet on this.  Maybe he’s learned moderation in his old age.

Oh who am I kidding, it’s Don Cherry we’re talking about here.
