John Tavares, Andrew MacDonald and Thomas Vanek scored second-period goals, and Kevin Poulin made 26 saves for his first win of the season as the New York Islanders beat the Boston Bruins 3-1 on Saturday night. Tavares knocked a loose puck past Bruins backup goalie Chad Johnson at 6:15 of the second for his sixth goal of the season. The assist went to his new left wing Vanek, who was acquired from Buffalo last week. After MacDonald scored his first of the season at 13:13 to make it 2-0, and Boston's Dougie Hamilton answered two minutes later, Vanek scored his first with the Islanders - one-timing a perfect cross-ice pass from Kyle Okposo past Johnson from the left circle at 16:08. Okposo and defenseman Travis Hamonic assisted on MacDonald and Vanek's goals. Vanek's goal was the 255th of his NHL career and his 500th point. The 29-year-old winger also assisted on Tavares' goal.

In his first game as an Isle, Thomas Vanek is primed to produce (Nov. 1 Daily Plays)

LW Thomas Vanek, New York Islanders – $9,388: Vanek was quiet in his Islander debut. His linemate John Tavares was also held off the score sheet, which doesn’t happen very often. Look for the two to find some chemistry together against a Sens team that has allowed 11 goals over their last two games.   C Patrik Berglund, St.Louis Blues – $4,244: Berglund has not been great...

Kyle Okposo finally reaching full potential with Islanders

When the New York Islanders picked Kyle Okposo with the seventh-overall selection in the 2006 NHL entry draft, this is the player that they were hoping for. The way he’s playing right now has been what they’ve been so patient for. Everyone knows that defensemen take longer to develop in this league than forwards. There’s one exception to that line of thinking though. Power...

Isles rally twice to defeat Senators in shootout

Tonight in Ottawa the Islanders played exactly how, generally speaking, you might expect them to. The offense was in mid-season form with five goals, multiple breakaways, a staggering 57 shots on goal and 90 (!) shot attempts. On defense, there were some mistakes and lapses interspersed with goal-creating jumps into the offensive zone and some soft goals let in by the starting netminder...

Neilsen lifts Isles to win at Ottawa

Bruins-Islanders Preview

Keeping the puck out of their own net continues to be a problem for the New York Islanders. It certainly has been in recent games against the Boston Bruins. The Islanders overcame those defensive deficiencies for one game and will try to win two straight for the first time this season Saturday night against the visiting Bruins. A determined effort by the Islanders on Friday at...

Who Wants To See A Scary Graph?

So it's still very early, we're only through 16% of the schedule. But as opposed to the early efforts vs Anaheim and San Jose, I'm finding it really hard right now to write off allowing 57 shots (new franchise record!) to the 2013/14 New York Islanders. In 13 games this season the Senators have allowed 50+ shots 3 times, in the previous 1576 games of the franchises...

"Something To Remember Me By..." Says Krys Barch

((HT: NHL)) The HQ has shown a lot of tooth-popping in the NHL these days- John Tavares, Pascal Dupuis, and now the Florida Panthers get in on the action- with a bit of added on... Krys Barch decided on some self-dentistry, but he didn't want to hang on to it for the Tooth Fairy... At least, that's what the fan thought... Of course, Barch wanted the dollar from...
