Waking up this morning after watching the Chicago Blackhawks score two goals in 17 seconds to defeat the Boston Bruins and win their second Stanley Cup in four season felt exactly like waking up as a kid on Christmas morning. My mind is still buzzing with excitement. I hardly remember the last minute of yesterday’s game because most of it was spent screaming, shouting and hugging every friend I watched the game with. I was so busy celebrating Bryan Bickell’s game-tying goal, I had no idea what was going on when Dave Bolland scored the game-winner. It was pure, joyous chaos. I have video to prove it. Every sports fan dreams of seeing his or her favorite team win a championship, but this one feels a little more special. After the ‘Hawks started the season 21-0-3 – breaking the NHL record for most consecutive games with a point – there was no doubt in my mind this team was a serious contender for the Cup. Instead of mellowing out after their historic beginning, the ‘Hawks continued their dominance, winning the President’s Trophy and posting a 36-7-5 record with an unbelievable plus-53 goal differential. Perfectly balanced on offense and defense, this team was on a mission, and it would take a perfect series to eliminate the ‘Hawks. Chicago faced an elimination scare from the Detroit Red Wings in the second round of the playoffs. The Wings, fresh off scraping through the playoffs and beating Anaheim in seven games, were playing near-perfect hockey against the ‘Hawks and jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the series. Chicago rallied back, and stole away the series in seven games on an overtime goal by Brent Seabrook. A 4-1 series victory over the Los Angeles Kings and an amazing Stanley Cup series finished off the exciting playoff run. I still haven’t wrapped my head around the whole thing just yet, but I have a whole week to do so, and what a hell of a week it’s going to be. The championship parade will most likely be Friday, and there couldn’t be any better way to end this already fantastic week. Sure, there will be the inevitable offseason trades and releases, but now is not the time to think or worry about that. But if you are a little down, here’s a video of Blackhawks’ captain, Jonathan Toews, moonwalking on the ice, which we can all agree is pretty awesome.
