(Editor’s Note: Naturally, this was written just before Scott Hartnell scored a goal in his most recent game against the Detroit Red Wings. Not that we’re complaining, mind you.) Since arriving in Philadelphia from Nashville following the 2007 season, Scott Hartnell had been a fairly consistent player. In each of his first 4 seasons in Philly, Hartsy put up between 43 and 60 points while missing only 3 total games over that span. Here’s a table showing his stats from those years: Hartnell’s traditional statistics by year 2007-2008 2008-2009 2009-2010 2010-2011 Games 80 82 81 82 Goals 24 30 14 …Continue reading »

Future Flyers Report: The end of the Subway Super Series, Canadian World Junior roster, Morin suspended

After Samuel Morin and Scott Laughton had their turns to take on Team Russia in the Subway Super Series, it was time for Taylor Leier and Team WHL to battle. Team Russia won the first meeting last Wednesday by the score of 3-2, but Team WHL rebounded and won the final game in the series 4-2. Leier was plus-1 with a goal and an assist in Team WHL’s loss, while he was minus-1 with...

Flyperbole: Rumor Ruminations on Steve Mason’s Next Contract, Henrik Lundqvist

MASON MISSION I am absolutely terrified of the contract that the Flyers are going to offer Steve Mason. Mase has been absolutely stellar this year. He has surpassed my wildest expectations thus far. But I’m waiting for the bottom to fall out of the bottom of the cardboard box that is Flyers goaltending.   Maybe I feel like Charlie Brown and Flyers goaltending is Lucy with the...

Red Downie

INT. WELLS FARGO CENTER, AFTERNOON.   Flyers forward STEVE DOWNIE has called a players only meeting on the team’s off day. Team captain CLAUDE GIROUX steps forward to question this.   GIROUX Hey, uh, Steve, you know, um, what is, uh, the deal with this, uh, meeting?   Downie rises from a dimly lit corner of the room into the light. It is obvious that he had unscrewed the...

Couturier Clips The Wings As Flyers Win 6-3

Looks like the wunderkind has finally figured it out. Ordinarily when Sean Couturier’s name has come up in the past, it’s usually been a fierce debate among Flyers fan over whether to cut bait and trade him or keep him and wait for him to develop, a nifty catch word used to tell people to be patient. As anyone affiliated with Philly’s win now mentality, patience isn’t...

Giroux watches his Olympic odds rise

As Claude Giroux helped run the Flyers power play in the morning skate Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena, he saw the opponent’s coach out of the corner of his eye. Mike Babcock sat about 15 rows up, his two assistants scouting the Flyers for a game that night, he looking at Giroux and wondering if he would be a good fit in a red and white jersey. Not for the Detroit Red Wings, but...

Flyers rally late to surge past Red Wings 6-3

Sean Couturier is the Flyers' third-line center, but lately he has been playing like the team's best all-around skater. Couturier scored two goals and added two assists Wednesday night as the Flyers overcame a two-goal deficit and jolted the Detroit Red Wings, 6-3, at a place that is usually their house of horrors - the Joe Louis Arena. The Flyers scored the last five goals...

Flyers Clip the Red Wings

On Wednesday night in Detroit the Philadelphia Flyers used a big third period to roll past the Red Wings, 6-3, at Joe Louis Arena. Center Sean Couturier led the Flyers in the third period with two goals. He chipped in two assists on the Flyers first two goals to give him four points on the night and earning him first star status. The beat up Red Wings were without their two best...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Cathartic Comeback at the Joe

In the grand scheme of things, it remains to be seen if the Philadelphia Flyers' 6-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings last night at Joe Louis Arena is a springboard to a successful run during the second half of the Flyers' six-game cross-country road trip. Looking at it in immediate aftermath, however, the Flyers' offensive explosion after trailing by scores of 1...

Flyers-Stars Preview

The Philadelphia Flyers are coming off their best scoring night of the season, and it came during a game in which they piled up a full period worth of penalty minutes. Offensive consistency and keeping five skaters on the ice couldn't hurt when the Flyers go for their fourth win in five games Saturday against a Dallas Stars team that has struggled at home. The Flyers' penalty...
