The latest update involving free agent Shane Doan is quite simple. After visiting many teams as an unrestricted free agent while all the time awaiting a resolution with the ownership status of his Phoenix Coyotes, we finally have some news to report as it concerns the future playing location of Doan.

The report, much as it has been this entire offseason, is that Doan is nowhere closer to picking a team than he was before free agency even began this past offseason.

Simply put, the news here remains the same as it has for the past couple of months.

Sadly, and even frustratingly, there is absolutely no new news.

We have heard it all. Heck, I feel as I have written it all. This is what I, as well as many others, have reported when it comes to Doan.

We still know that his heart is in the desert. It always has and maybe always will. Doan wants to stay with the Coyotes to finish out his career that has already spanned 16 seasons in the NHL. But he wants to see how the ownership battle will break down with Greg Jamison. That has to be settled completely before Doan will most likely sign with any team, including the Coyotes.

Second, the money being thrown out there seems to be around 4 years and $30 million. That was the first number reported here that came from a mystery team in the Eastern Conference. We do not know if it was the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers or another team, but we do know that it seemed to have set the benchmark for Doan going forward.

We also know that the New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings all remain interested. The Rangers were considered the favorites to land Doan if he leaves Phoenix, especially if they will add a fourth year to their contract offer.

But the whole thing about Doan having narrowed down his list of possibilities to three or four teams appears to have strictly been speculation. Doan never said it, and now his agent is saying that it did not come from his mouth either. That means we really have no idea how many different teams that Doan is still considering.

We only know this much.

Doan is still a free agent, and, despite the self imposed deadlines he continues to set regarding his future, nothing appears to be too imminent.

That means we all need to stay tuned and remain patient. It is not as if we are getting closer to a National Hockey League season starting on time anyway, right?

2012 A.D. – After Doan

Perhaps a more appropriate title would have been, “2012 W.D. – Without Doan”. Regardless, it now looks like Greg Jamison is moving closer to securing the funding necessary to complete his proposed purchase of the Phoenix Coyotes. Subsequently, it appears more likely that as a result Shane Doan’s wish to remain with the only franchise [...]
