It was said on Twitter. McLellan was quoted saying it on Working the Corners and in Kurz’s CSN blog. It was discussed during the pregame show.  It was the big story before Saturday’s game in the mostly empty arena: how very dangerous, unpredictable, hungry and possibly tough to play against the Phoenix Coyotes would be.  What were they thinking?  Here’s what I was thinking: I didn’t get it.  Why would the Coyotes be more frantic than Dallas?  Isn’t that losing streak they’ve been on an indication that they are not playing well?  Was everyone trying to say the Coyotes have the Sharks’ number?  If that’s the case, I thought, it’s a very bad sign for the Sharks.  I hoped fervently that it was all a bunch of manufactured drama, like the endless euphemism-filled discussion of where Niemi was hit by that puck, why he missed the last game.  I’m still not clear.  As Brodie pointed out during the pregame show, women don’t understand these things.  Someone will have to be

1,200 and counting for Coyotes' Whitney

Ray Whitney will play his 1,200th NHL game tonight against Detroit. If my calculations are correct, hes one of just 91 players to achieve that milestone. That doesnt mean he has a bottle of champagne at the ready in the Coyotes locker room. A thousand is the big one, Whitney said. After that, it just means youre getting old. It also means youve stayed healthy and youre pretty...

Coyotes' urgency rising as season winds down

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Dave Tippett is still consulting those reams of unorthodox stats he keeps in a secret location. Hes still tweaking personnel groups, assessing his teams strengths and needs and pushing psychological buttons to light fires under his underperformers. One thing the Coyotes coach isnt doing is pleading with his team to adopt a sense of urgency. If I have to be the...

Cam Gore: Coyotes earn big win against San Jose

The Phoenix Coyotes showed more desperation tonight in the desert as they downed the Sharks 5-3. Everything the Coyotes did tonight they were just a little bit better than the Sharks. On Lauri Korpikoski’s first goal the defense wasn’t that bad by Braun, he was on him, but not tight enough. Smith was better than Niemi and the Coyotes’ line changes were definitely...

NHL: Idea of coach's challenge gains advocates

Notes: Two hotly disputed calls -- which were wrong, according to instant replays -- might have cost the Coyotes two points last week. Count coach Dave Tippett among those who favor consideration of a coach's challenge in the NHL.

Detroit Red Wings (35-16-2) at Phoenix Coyotes (23-21-8), 8 p.m. (ET)

Not having their starting goaltender over the weekend did little to help Detroit shake off its road issues. However, a trip to Phoenix just might do the trick.
