Steel City Sports Report:
Columbus Blue Jackets
The NHL's GM meetings take place in Toronto this week, starting Wednesday, and there could be some movement on the trade front by the weekend as a result. As Elliotte Friedman, among others, reported yesterday, prices for trade pieces are extremely high due to over 80% of the league still currently in contention for a playoff spot. As bad as the Washington Capitals have played -currently sitting in 13th place in the East- they are only six points out from the 8th seed.Meanwhile, in the Western Conference, the last place Colorado Avalanche are also six points out of a playoff spot. To make matters worse for contending teams looking for a trade partner, the Columbus Blue Jackets have earned at least one point in ten straight games, giving optimism to any team currently fighting to get out of the cellar.Prices have been inflated for deadline pieces, as a result. Jarome Iginla's rumored price is a forward, prospect and draft pick; a high bargain for a 35 year old upcoming free...

from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet,
... this summer will probably see a NHL player sign a deal that averages at least $10 million per season for the first time in roughly a decade. Pittsburgh Penguins centre Evgeni Malkin should be able to command that type of money when negotiations begin on an extension that will start in 2014.
Ray Shero, the Penguins general manager, has...
The Pittsburgh Penguins are known for their explosive offense, but Sunday’s tilt with the Bruins was a defensive affair. The two teams combined for just three goals, and the game-winner came courtesy of an unlikely source.
Northeastern alum Joe Vitale scored for just the sixth time in his NHL career — and the first time since last February — with 32 seconds remaining in the...
The 2013 season has been a year of streaks. First, we witnessed Chicago's remarkable run of 24 consecutive games with a point. Now we're watching the Pittsburgh Penguins burn through NHL opponents, winning 10 consecutive games.
The Penguins need just one more win to match Chicago's 11-game winning streak . With the Penguins bearing down on the best winning streak...
Defenseman Matt Niskanen scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Sidney Crosby had two assists and the Pittsburgh Penguins extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.
Niskanen's goal at 11:58 came nine seconds after the Penguins killed a four-minute penalty in the third period.
The winning streak is the longest...
Colligan drops some knowledge in his latest joint about Chris Stewart:
That leaves two possible names that could fit into a potential Stewart deal: Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen.
On one hand, it’s wild to even suggest a trade of Orpik. He’s been with the organization his entire career and brings a physical presence that’s unmatched by any other regular defenseman...
The Pittsburgh Penguins have played splendidly in spite of the absence of superstar Evgeni Malkin, but they might have another key player missing in their next game.
Defenseman Kris Letang's status is unknown as Pittsburgh seeks the franchise's fifth win streak of 10 or more games Tuesday night against the visiting Washington Capitals.
Malkin, the league's reigning...
Last week, some trailer featuring Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin in a Russian movie titled 12 Months debuted. Today, we translate.
The basis of this movie falls on some cute woman who gets wishes that were meant for a kid. Or something along those lines. And the kid wants to meet or play hockey with Geno and Ilya Kovalchuk. Even in Russia, Alex Ovechkin is 2nd tier.
Sidney Crosby and Joe Vitale scored for the Penguins as they came away with a 2-1 win over Boston, their ninth straight victory. Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves in the win and only allowed Tyler Seguin’s 1oth goal of the season to Boston.
SPIN: Pittsburgh took over the top spot in the Eastern Conference even as Evgeni Malkin missed his fifth straight game. Defenseman Kris Letang wasn’t...
Matt Niskanen probably scored one of the more emotional goals this season and the Pens are sitting at 10 straight wins now.
Paul Martin chipped in with a goal, and Marc Andre Fleury was completely locked in. The Caps look like a shell of their former selves. This loss may have beena nail in their coffin.
Here is the gif of Nisky's goal:

We imagine that someone scheduled this Penguins/Bruins game for 12:30pm on St. Patrick's Day and then laughed.
Season Series: 1-0-0
Last meeting that counted: March 12, 2013. Penguins won 3-2.

Right now, it doesn't feel as big as it once did when the Capitals visit Pittsburgh. But, believe us, if the Caps beat the Penguins tonight and break the Pens' winning streak, they'll be hanging a banner up...
