As Paul noted, the CBC's Elliotte Friedman posited his weekly "30 Thoughts" column this afternoon, and one of his "thoughts" should put Red Wings fans at some ease: Pavel Datsyuk's agent, Gary Greenstin, was in Toronto visiting client Mikhail Grabovski. We talked about rumours Datsyuk will play the last year of his contract next season, then go back to Russia. Greenstin said he'd just been in Detroit and talked with Ken Holland. He wouldn't go too deeply into those conservations, but it did sound like they discussed the possibility of an extension. (Datsyuk cannot sign anything until July 5.) He added that if Datsyuk stays, it will be with the Red Wings. "Playing with one team is very important to him." Continued, of course, at length, and as usual, his thoughts are worth your time...

The Huskies (and Red Wings prospect Nick Jensen) lose their locks

Those of you who watched Saint Cloud State University play in the Frozen Four, or in any college hockey game this season, probably noticed that a significant chunk of their roster sported shoulder-length hair under their helmets. It turns out that the players, including Red Wings prospect Nick Jensen, were growing out their hair for Locks of Love, and on Sunday, the Saint Cloud...

Johan Franzen scores from center ice on Miika Kiprusoff

The Detroit Red Wings are in danger of missing the NHL Playoffs for the first time since the 1989-1990 season.  Losing 3-1 to the Calgary Flames, the Red Wings were in need of a break and with 2:42 left in the third period they got one.  Johan Franzen dumped a weak backhand shot in from center ice and it skipped just far enough in front of Flames goalie Miika Kiprusoff that he...

NHL playoff push: Red Wings hope streak hits 22

The Detroit Red Wings earned two points they desperately needed at Nashville, putting them in eighth place in the Western Conference standings. The streaking Dallas Stars, Columbus and Phoenix are all right behind Detroit. It’s Been A Struggle For The Wings

from Damien Cox of the the Spin at the Toronto Star, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg have had to shoulder more of the burden than ever before. Detroit's dearth of high-end young talent after years of drafting either poorly or out of range of the best kids has finally began to impact its lineup. Injuries have hurt. Damien Brunner got hot and then he cooled. Jonas Gustavsson...

Why extending the contract of Jimmy Howard was without a doubt the right move for the Wings

Monday the Red Wings made it official by announcing that they extending the contract of starting goaltender Jimmy Howard. The financials for the contract was what was speculated on a few weeks back which was a 6-year deal for $31.8 million dollars and an annual cap hit of $5.3 million dollars going forward. Metro Detroit’s best-kept hockey secret, the Plymouth Whalers, battle the ‘Yankees of Junior Hockey’

Yahoo Sports' Neate Sager reports that Plymouth Whalers coach Mike Velucci played the underdog card in a big way ahead of Plymouth's OHL Western Conference Final match-up against the London Knights, but in doing so, Velucci did speak the truth regarding the fact that the Whalers are the best Detroit-area hockey team that you've probably rarely heard of: "It...

Red Wings-Flames Preview

While some players may not like to admit it, Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard isn't shy about checking the standings and out-of-town scoreboard as the Red Wings fight to extend their 21-season playoff streak. He may not like what he sees after Wednesday night's contest if visiting Detroit can't get past a Calgary Flames team that has won both meetings this season. &...

The Detroit Red Wings packed their equipment bags and headed for an off-day in Vancouver after dropping an 3-1 decision against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, and their loss, combined with Columbus still playing (and are tied 2-2 as I write this) leaves the Wings in a particularly difficult position in the Western Conference standings, especially with Dallas (2 points behind...

Can the Red Wings hang on and make the playoffs?

It’s a fair question to ask. Detroit is playing for their playoff lives and in danger of missing the postseason for the first time since the 89-90’ season. That’s before Lidstrom made his way to Detroit and back when Head Coach Mike Babcock was 2-years removed from his minor league hockey career that ended in 1988 with the Whitley Warriors. In fact it’s been so long since...
